I often wondered if the Late John Smith had become PM,no Tony Blair etc, would things now be different.
I hope he takes the greedy pigs with him. The Queen should disolve Parliament so that MP's are forced to stand again and fight for their seats.
I will be glad to see the back of him and the rest of the fiddling MPs, although he's probably being paid off to resign rather than wait for a vote of no confidence.
One thing puzzles me. If he resigns as speaker, does it automatically mean that he loses his seat on the backbenches?

For him to dare to try to manipulate the Freedom of Information Act to suit MP`s disclosure of expenses is a disgrace, obviously guided by the top blokes but he did it. He`s become yet another puppet "socialist." Look at him? Red faced and bloated...living off the fat of the land...us. He`s not alone, ufortunately. Bye bye Martin, you`ve let your working class roots down.
Next?
I agree Scotty

He`s announcing within the hour Daniel...not sure if he is giving up his seat...

I know that. I mean, it doesn't sound like he'll be leaving his job just yet. That is, he'll be announcing his plan to leave.
Yes it seems he will be "chairing" a few things before he goes at the end of the month...possibly
Speaker announcing his resignation in 15 minutes
Now it's being blamed on him being kafflick!!
I can't forgive him for his handling of the Damian Green affair either and the way he tried to blame his Sergeant at Arms.

Moreover, IMO....I think he is a symbol of everything that's wrong with Parliament at the moment.

No! It's because he's a better fiddler than Nero...or is that Romanist?

He`ll stand down this afternoon and be gone within the month. I understand now this means he will lose his Glasgow North East seat and a bi-election will take place.
He was working class MP who cared for his constituents. I`m sure he still does but the gravy train took more precedence...he forgot his roots. Stolen luxury comes at a price.
That's my constituancy,he's my MP.
What do you think?

LOL... yes... now let's have an election and sort out the rest of them
But he is so loveable, a real character, lovely voice too.

Yes indeed - they think this will get them off the hook, but it won't. He was only part of the problem, so booting him out is only part of the solution.
I'm wondering how many of us will bother to vote in the MEP elections. If you thought the Commons was a gravy train....

But what about his seat, his ÂĢ100K handshake, and his peerage?

The Times is reporting that Anne Widdecombe has offered her services as interim speaker. Not sure if that is a joke.

Awww. I reckon she'd do a good job. She'd take no nonsense anyway. I remember when she did an Agony Aunt column for a little while in, I think, the Guardian. It was great. Mostly, it was "pull yourself together" and stuff like that.

Yeah... you wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of her!

I wonder what the men in grey suits said to the speaker in the end and what he'll get as a payoff. He's lucky they didn't leave a bottle of whiskey and a revolver.
Anne Widdecombe has just denied that she will be putting herself forward for speaker.
Cue loads of toadying MPs outside the commons sliming on about how wonderful the speaker was.
