I've just got back from the consultant and she's told me that next Friday they want to give me a sweep and stretch. I queried this because by next Friday I'll still only be 38 weeks & 5 days and I didn't think they usually did it so early. The consultant said it's because they are still a bit worried about my BP being on the high side and but they don't want to go the whole hog and induce me. I just wondered if anyone here has had this themselves? Does it hurt, is it safe, will it work etc?

Did she have the baby soon after the sweep?

Nothing to worry about, a smidge uncomfortable but if they want to move you along because of your high BP than it's worth a try. It doesn't always work (never has for me but then I'm stubborn) but I have heard of it working. Is the baby engaged and if so how far down is bubba?

I'm pretty sure it's engaged but it does tend to move around quite a bit so it's hard to judge.

Two days later, she had minor contractions for a couple of days and they popped her waters and he was born later that day.

Thanks, that makes sense and sounds like what they are hoping to happen with me. Thumbs Up I think I'm going to start on the hot curries and baths tonight though and try to avoid it. Wink

It doesn't hurt Queenie.... its just a little undignified (well... it was quite a lot undignified for me... but mine was at the GPs).

For me it didn't do anything, no matter how many times he did it.

Your best bet for getting things moving is to have some special cuddles with Mr Queenie! (again... not the most dignified thing to be attempting in your condition... but its something to do with Prostoglandin or something)

I only ask because I believe it tends to work better when the baby is engaged.

It's not fun but it's worth doing so have a Hug

They normally do a sweep to get things going, as would a stretch of the cervix, it's not painful hun just a bit uncomfortable. Your cervix should be quite 'stretchy' now, and hopefully the sweep and stretch should help the plug of mucous normally known as a 'show' to come away. You will be fine, and at 38 weeks + ickle queen will be well cooked. Hug

I'm fairly sure the ex was imagining something similar.... he seemed to be concentrating very hard on something with his eyes closed!

I just tried to go to a happy place and pretend it wasn't happening! Laugh

Just utterly naffed off, Kathy!

I had to go to the hospital again yesterday and in the morning it was my sons appointment (blood/iron and some more ongoing autism stuff), got there at 9.30am for what was supposed to be a four hour appointment...sat waiting for over an hour trying to placate a stressed out autie kid and getting kicked, lashed at....to then get his bloods done and told to go as the autism test person was sick!!

So I had an appt, over at maternity for my pre c-section meds and had timed it for 2.10pm so I could be with my boy and then have time for lunch and my appt...went to maternity to ask could they do my meds there and then to save me a return visit (can't drive as in sooo much pain now and taxis are ÂĢ8 each way)...no can do, so came home on bus to save money, bad idea as bus took ions to get back and I felt everybump...was so painful.

Returned at 2.10pm by cab with son as nobody was available to help...he was a pain in the ass, throwing cups of water around, getting out his wheelchair and broke a bp hand held machine by lobbing it at wall. Anyway baby is so engaged now I can't sleep, eat, sit, stand or do anything, it's excruciatinf for me and my bp is still high hence all the extra monitoring I've had, I'm dizzy and just feeling unwell....begged consultant for my section to be brought forward by just a couple of days to give me some relief, but he wouldn't agree saying it would detrimental to the baby who may end up in scbu for a day....(my other consultant has a different opinion and thinks that to do this would be fine, but the male one would not back down.....he sent me out saying "go home, eat a curry and have sex!"...stupid man!!! Mad I tried arguing the case that the baby is estimated in great health and good size and that I was finding it difficult to function and look after my kids...still no, didn't even check me over as regard to pains, just wanted me out!

I ended up in the car park in hysterics and had randoms asking me what was wrong...I couldn't even speak and can't remember how long I was there....I then realised I'd not been given my meds so went back in, one of midwives took one look at me and just hugged me (which made me more emotional!!!) and went to get the doc back to speak to me....he came back and I couldn't even talk, I just sobbed for ages and then he said that I didn't need the meds anyway as baby was coming in what was considered "completely full term", so I again said well it that was the case, what the issue with me coming in earlier to get me out of this pain I'm in...he just stood up and said see you next Friday....I'm in despair here, sorry for the dramamtics but I am killing over and I'm not able to do anything with the kids....I'm hald sat down/half stood trying to stop the pain, painkillers don't touch it...

Just sick of being like this, I haven't really moaned about the stuff that's brought me down this pregnancy but I am now...I deserve it!!

I've got high bp, borderline pre-eclampsia, hyperemisis (extreme sickness), dizzyness, headaches and I'm still chucking up all the time and I have two kids to care for...it's bloody hard....I wish somebody would knock me out till next friday.....anybody willing to volunteer?!

And every bloody forum I use all I hear is that somebody else due after me is/are having their baby's, just pisses me off even more!!

Bet you wish you'd never asked now, don't you?! Ninja

Oh you poor thing, thats awful, I thought with the conditions you have mentioned, that they would do a C section for your safety and the baby's safety.. Can you not speak to your other consultant and ask them to do something? Getting so upset is not going to do either of you any good - your blood pressure is skyrocket and that won't do the baby any good.

I really really hope you can get it sorted out and thinking about you with fingers crossed.
