I would guess she is touching her hair 90% of the time. That can`t be normal.
I find hair-tossing very irritating.
But what Sophie does is so extreme.
I can`t imagine having my hand on my head for most of the day.
Is it abnormal? Should she get help?

She's obsessive about it isn't she, I find it very annoying to watch. I wonder if any HM's ever commented on it it

You maybe right, I had a friend who unknowingly pulled out her edges Frowner
I have it myself PCE, have had it since teenager.
It is a compulsion and you simply cannot help it. Some people have very severe. It is not understood very well, but getting more recognised. Sophie's unconscious reaching for her scalp is a sure sign. I thought it was because of her extensions to start with but it is more than that Smiler Hug

I think you're right there. My sister-in-law had it from a child and even pulled her eyelashes out. She's mostly over it now but has the odd episode when she's stressed. The worse part of it though, is that the eldest of her four daughters sometimes does it too, but their GP said it's a secondary type where she just copied her mum after seeing her do it since she was a baby. That's good to hear that you sister in law almost over it. These OCD's are learned.. passed on to kids particularly daughters, but hopefully your niece will get over it too. I hope so Hug Hug

I see my five year old looking her hair and fiddling with it like I do and it makes me really sad.

I've mostly got it under control now but I did have a big bald patch under the right hand side at the back when I was going through a particularly stressful time.

Thanks for throwing light on this folks.
In my opening post I said "not normal" and "irritating", because apart from finding it annoying I did suspect that it was unnatural to do it to the extreme that Sophie does.
So I much appreciate what some of you have added from your own experiences about this issue.
I am now wiser. Thanks folks.
