Isadora, I don't know where you live, but I'd be after a cottage with a kitchen that you can sit in and at the same time have lots of shelves for your cookbooks and a rayburn (aga), dried herbs hanging off the beams and a nice walled garden out the back (doesn't have to be big, just enough to have friends and a bottle of wine or two   )

Hi Cologne

I am in a cottage at the moment ( rented).Turn of the century and very very expensive to run.

I am going for a modern house but do you know what? I am soo glad I have been able to have the experience of living in a cottage

but she has decided against a carpert and I can hear everything. I've been here almost 3 years and the old neighbours were very quiet. Help. She's a nice person and I don't want to upset her just as she moves in.
It's a hard one Cologne, but I wish you luck. That's why I would never have a d/stairs flat or have wooden floors.

Thanks Pam. My problem is that I got this flat because of my lungs and the problems thereof, so I am grateful and, unfortunately have no say in who moves in upstairs. Having said that, I could have been really unlucky and get a heroin addict with lots of traffick outside my door.

Yeah, I suppose you could look at it that way. Actually.....who am I to give advice on house sounds. My next door neighbour believes in playing with motor bikes on the front drive during the summer months and the constant revving gets on my nerves  Even the neighbour over the other side has mentioned it. I know I make my noise and they make theirs, but there is a limit

Neighbours are an issue - I am going to go back to the road in the evening and at odd times to check them out
Sod it. Be proactive. Don a disguise, knock on the door and say you're from the noise abatement department and you are just reminding all tenants of the rules of noise and courtesy to other neighbours. Say it is a new Tory scheme. They'll believe you
