Cheryl Cole's brother has been sentenced to jail for six years for his involvement in an armed robbery.

Andrew Tweedy was arrested for his part in planning the robbery in which ÂĢ2,000 was stolen from a Newcastle post office in May last year. Newcastle Crown Court was told that Tweedy had allowed the robbers to use his nearby flat as a base and borrow his imitation handgun, The Sun reports.

Upon his arrest, Tweedy told police the names of the four other men who were involved. They were sentenced separately in a hearing last week.

Judge Roger Thorn heard that the 30-year-old had 30 previous convictions to his name and that the latest breached a suspended sentence for a previous attack. At 13, Tweedy was first convicted of robbery and at 17 was sentenced to six years in a Young Offenders Institute for stabbing a man and a woman.

However, Judge Thorn also praised Tweedy for his "frank admissions to the police and clearly being of assistance to them".

The other four men involved received varying sentences of between six and seven years after pleading guilty to robbery and possession of offensive weapon and imitation weapon.

Speaking after the sentencing, superintendent Andy McDyer said: "This robbery caused great distress to the members of staff caught up in the crime at the post office and concern among members of the wider community."
