And I like to oblige if it's within my gift.

I don't ask  them for money or intricate details of their lives,I say 'yes'-'of course you can borrow my car,I won't need it back until Tuesday'.

I hand over the key and watch my car drive off with my happy friend inside.

Isn't that nice? - yes I think so too.

So when they bring it back on Tuesday  and there is no feckin' petrol in it and I have to coast up to traffic lights in an effort to the to the petrol station? - or worse still, although in this case I don't have to rely on the fumes to get me there, people who have borrowed my car put some petrol in and I know they not only  clocked where the fuel gauge pointer was as they trundled off down the drive with my car, but have done the calculations as to how much in litres and money terms  they will have to put in the tank to return the gauge to the precise location it was reading when they started it up 4 days ago.

They must have it imprinted on a mental image in their heads that they referred to 4 days later, so they could drive up to my house looking all noble because they haven't written it off or got any tickets, they are all pleased with themselves as they announce, handing the key back - 'I filled it up!.

No, no you didn't really, did you?

I would be on the telephone too damn quick asking them to get their posterior back to my gaff with enough readies to fill up the motor or "don't darken my door again".

When you compare the loan of your car to a hire car for the same period, they have saved a pretty penny, the only decent thing to do is put the same or more fuel back in. Let's face it a little extra as a thank you would not be unreasonable.

Twice recently I've lent my car to 2 different people, and they both did it!

I think it's been brought about by fuel prices and the recession...

Whaaaat a liberty!

Seriously Jackson, don't be so obliging in future  Tell 'em there's something wrong with the car, to avoid offence. They'll work it out.
