The only time I've ever had a virus was when I used Norton so I avoid that like the plague.  I don't like McAfee although I have used it

You got a virus despite Norton Pengy? flippin heck that's awful

I also don't fancy McAfee - it came preloaded with a three month trial but I discontinued it.

The start button missing from 8.0 makes a comeback and it's also possible to have desktop mode and avoid the tiled interface.

No mention of any improved compatability for all those programs which don't work on Windows 8.

Free to those with Windows 8.0

Thanks for that info El, I passed it on two that I know. One a family member who has Windows 8 and she hates it, it drives her to distraction lol. The other is a friend in the US who said she was going to order a pc with 8 from QVC US. She's now going to get 8.1 that they will be selling soon.

I have Windows 7 and use eM Client for mail. It is very similar to Outlook, and will import outlook files.

Em Client is only free for 2 email accounts. . any more and you have to pay for it. . Thunderbird is free for as many accounts as you need.. it has its foibles but is the nearest fully free product to Outlook Express for Windows beyond XP..

For those of you that have Windows 8, read El Loro's post that offered a free download to Windows 8.1...did that work out and you now have 8.1?

As I mentioned earlier I sent the post to my sister who has 8.0 and hates it. She clicked on a link at the site but got nowhere, she's been trying for a couple of days but still nothing except being sent to a link to buy 8.1 for around ÂĢ100 even though it's supposed to be free for those that have 8.0.

Spoke to my sister tonight and she's so frustrated with it all. I've done some research but I can only find articles about 8.0 and 8.1 but no links to what she should be entitled to for free. Would appreciate some feedback.

Link to Microsoft's detailed instructions on how to update Windows 8.0 to 8.1 from their App store for free.

I've seen elsewhere that people trying to update RT devices have had major problems and that Microsoft withdrew the Windows RT update yesterday. That's just for RT devices.

El Loro

Moonie it is easy to google.   I use it all the time when I have a question I need answering.. just type what is an RT?. . none of us have a lot of full on info at our fingertips.. most of us google first, read up, then try to put it in words people can understand if we are looking to help answer a question for someone. . I google all the time for the more complicated stuff and also to refresh my memory

or some may just c&P which may not be as helpful if it is still in geek or techie language

but just for you, a google search says Windows RT is the smartphone or notepad version of the windows 8 operating system that is currently being used on laptops and desktop PC's. . these operating systems are usually a lot more condensed as there is less space and speed and ability to do things on phones and notepad thingy's so they strip a lot of the junk or less needed functionality out.

ps that's ^^^^ my own words not a C&P

Moonie, Windows RT is a version of Windows 8 and is intended for those devices which use what is called ARM architecture. These are generally thin devices intended to be mobile.

There are some types of Windows 8.0 where the free upgrade to 8.1 is not available. I've taken this from the link I posted earlier. I think these are more likely to be businesses with many computers rather than individuals.

These include:

  • Windows 8 Enterprise

  • Editions of Windows 8 Pro that are installed by enterprises using KMS activation

  • Editions of Windows 8 that are installed using an MSDN ISO, and activated using multiple activation keys

If you’re running one of these editions, you can't install the free update to Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1 from the Store.
