I've recently bought a new lappy with windows 8 but haven't had time to sort it yet, however I know I need to sort firewall and AV stuff for it. It came with Mcafee (which I haven't used) so don't know anything about it. I think I'm gonna get rid of that and install my own. It will be either Norton or Webroot stuff. Thing is, I'm confused about Norton Internet Security and Norton 360. What's the difference? can anyone help please?

Out eldest grandson insisted on windows 8 and it's a load of bollocks. However his new machine will revert to 7 which is marginally less a load of bollocks.
I get by with 7, but have reloaded XP on Mrs Jer's machines. She swears by it, and sometimes at it.
I switched a couple of months ago from Norton [long term user] to Kaspersky. I like it far better.
LOL Joe, (Mrs Jer)
Yes, I wanted 7 at first but realised there wasn't too many outlets selling it, so I decided to go with 8, thinking I would have to get used to it eventually. I don't consider myself a numpty on pooters but neither am I Bill Gates(or anyone who worked with him)
I just can't get my head around the difference between the two versions of Norton at the moment

I see Roger, Thanks
There are 3 main Norton products. In increasing order of cost and features, they are:
Norton Antivirus;
Norton Internet Security;
Norton 360.
I'm not sure I can do their differences justice, but:
Norton AntiVirus is as you'd expect: it just does what it says on the tin.
I think the main difference with Norton Internet Security is that it also does PC tune-ups (defrag, startup manager, etc).
Norton 360 does the AV, tune-ups and automatic backups of up to 2GB.

I use 360, but TBH it's probably overkill for my needs. That's not to say that you wouldn't get more out of it...
Right, I'm off to bed now, but I'll try and look in at dinnertime tomorrow for any more replies. Trouble is, we're stacked with people on programme at the minute and hardly get a minute to ourselves.
If I don't get back to you tomorrow dinnertime, I'll look in tomorrow night. thanks all
Goodnight Sprout
Stay away from all things Norton, it is evil and once in your machine it never ever goes away and always clashes with other programs that are or will be installed..
Get AVG free, there is no need to fork out for an AV when there are good free ones out there. Windows has its own Firewall built in and various other free programmes do the defrag and clean up stuff. . Windows has its own inbuilt defrag and clean up too .. Malwarebytes [another free shareware] will pick up any stuff the AVG free may miss.. never any need to pay for stuff like that when you get get the same or better for free

Microsoft are due to cease support for Windows XP on 8 April next year, so less than 6 months away. That means they will stop issuing security updates so anyone continuing to use XP will need to rely on 3rd party software for security protection. That doesn't mean that the inbuilt firewall will cease to work, just that it won't get updated.
Microsoft may be forced to ended the support life of Windows XP because as of last April some 38% of computers using Windows were still using Windows XP, many of those being used in businesses.
Businesses which do move to a newer version of Windows are more likely to move to 7 rather than 8 as less compatability issues.

I'm with Olly on Norton
I finally gave up on Norton [I'd used it for years] after it let a thing called snapdo install itself on my pc. Everytime I went to Google/My homepage there was snapdo - designed to look like google. It was hard to get rid off, took several attempts. Also things like unwanted commercial toolbars etc would get installed sometimes.
I like Kaspersky because there are more checks - boxes asking you before you proceed etc. Even afterwards Kaspersky boxes pop up saying there are unprocessed items you downloaded and explaining in detail what they are eg legal software but which might be used by criminals etc.
I like Kaspersky because its super cautious + treats you like a technology idiot which is what I am
The scans take far longer - sometimes hours instead of Norton's maybe 30-45 mins. Also it doesn't seem to slow down my pc as much.
Don't know much about pcs but Kaspersky seems more rigorous somehow and I trust it more.
Microsoft may be stopping any further security updates for XP next yr but the hackers have moved on to concentrate on Win 7 & 8 . .the free-ware out there is really good so there is no need to stop Win XP. . I am sticking with it on my desktop. .I love Outlook Express and the fact it uses my Word dictionary for spell check.. and until Windows put it back again I'm sticking with XP. .
lappy is windows 7 tho and having to use thunderbird email client on that.. spell check is rubbish and Mircrosoft Outlook is rubbish too .. as for Windows Live . .don't even get me started on that piece of junk.,.
Microsoft have released Windows 8.1 today:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-24564738
The start button missing from 8.0 makes a comeback and it's also possible to have desktop mode and avoid the tiled interface.
No mention of any improved compatability for all those programs which don't work on Windows 8.
Free to those with Windows 8.0
oops did I give the game away hubby GJ
Kidding!

Me neither Rexi. Thank God they brought the Start button back. Windows 8 is doing my head in!
And thanks to El Loro for bringing the good news
I have to agree about Norton's, I wouldn't have it given. Like Olly and Rexi I use AVG and Malware. In fact the one and only time I was infected with a virus I was running Norton's I can't see the point in forking out money for anti virus when there are so many free and better anti virus out there. Plus, you're computer isn't clogged up with all the other crap that Norton's and Mcfee install

Sorry Olls, but if I ever get into computer bother I always seek you out on here, so to find out that I'd made the same choices as you quite made my day!!
Thanks, everyone for your replies I'm more confused than ever now My new Webuser mag out today seems to think Kaspersky at the minute. I'll have to do something soon. I've had the comp about three weeks and it isn't even out the box yet!!
Unpack it.
Load AVG.
Remove Norton.
Load Office.
Load Malwarebytes.
Job's a goodun. Start now and it'll be all done in an hour

That's too simple Rexi...I've told her about AVG and Malwarebytes for years...head and wall spring to mind
Noooo! I can't! I'm on the wine Rexi

Well yes, maybe not tonight then.
But tomorrow, just get on it ... stop overthinking things

That's my problem I think, but I'm trying to make space for other stuff i want to do and I like/need to study things like this in case they go wrong so I know what to do

Tis good to research ... but there has to come a time to stop and see if you made the right decision
