Don't apologise - I completely agree

I've listened to an interview lately and the guy is a complete moron
He is. I watched an interview recently on youtube where he claims he 'doesn't like people' and laughs. Yeah course he doesn't, painfully pretentious waste of space probably till the day he dies but he did write great lyrics.
Issy, it's depressing if you don't get it. If you do, it's personal, witty and profound. Johnny Marr's jangly guitar was also a big part and attraction of the Smiths. The Smiths had many impersonators at the time. It depends what sort of person you are. Listening to The Kings of Leon or clichÃĐd conveyor belt rubbish from acts like Chipmunk is a profoundly depressing experience which far exceeds anything by The Smiths IMO.
To be honest, I've never tried.
Unfortunately, I found out that Morrisey was a tosser before attempting to like the Smiths.

Of course he doesn't like people. He plays up to that misanthropic, miserable git persona and he's pretentious and arrogant with it. Bless him!

Why is it depressing if somebody doesn't get it. What is it they don't get? The guy being a pain in the arse?
I couldn't quite believe my ears, when I heard him being interviewed in his adopted home, Italy, complaining about all the foreigners living in the UK.
Well quite Blizz.
He is the Jaques Brel de nos jours!
I think Morissey is kind of unique in that he was in a band I really loved but I loathe him as a person. I could never think that of any others who were imo 'greats'. It's not just the pretentious loaner thing I know people who went to see him live and he played two songs and disappeared because he didn't like the audience reaction or some other bull the bloke is something that begins with C.

well that's appalling - I fell asleep mid thread
Even my thread about the Smiths sent me off

Morrisey is pretending to be a fractured artist. Give it a rest already.
Blizz'ard,
There's always been a hint of racism about Morrissey and it's been articulated vaguely in some of his music and The Smiths' music. He notoriously draped himself in the union flag when he supported Madness to play up to their perceived skinhead audience. IMO, he is a racist albeit, not a raving BNP style one. "Bengali In Platforms" is the most obvious example of a racist hint to Morrissey's lyrics - but it is all in the interpretation.

It speaks volumes of The Smiths' enduring popularity and the idiosyncratic mark they've made on music that over 20 years after they split, no one's going to start a thread on: -
So Atomic Kitten?
So Then Jericho?
So The Lighthouse Family?
So M People?
So East 17?
So The Police?

Carnelian I've got to ask what your taste in music is. Given your previous remarks I am expecting utterly jolly merry-making selections which will no doubt be a joy to one and all.

I think I'm one of those but I'm not playing up to a stereotype Reference:

More like the No Light at the End of the Tunnel family. If you're looking for music to slit your wrists by, you'd be bringing your A game listening to them while you do it. That singer's voice is like post-kebab vomit

Which is my point Carnelian . Clearly they have made a mark and I am asking "what is it that I am missing here?"
I don't think you're missing anything Issy. I just think they're not to your taste. I've mentioned Marr's distinctive jangly guitar and Morrisey's distinctive lyrics and vocal style the other guys in that band just went with the flow. Morrissey was a charismatic front-man and they were a competent and diverse band and although I've never seen them live, by all accounts, a good live act. You either like it or you don't.
It's a bit like Queen for me. I just don't get it or like it. It's not for me. When people say about Freddie Mercury's pompous showmanship and stage persona and how great it was, I can see where they're coming from but I just don't like that style. They may say they were a great live act, well maybe they were but I just don't like their music. They may say Brian May's guitar playing was distinctive and accomplished, and it is, but I don't like the noise that comes out of his guitar.
Oddly I quite like Muse, who I always see as "like Queen, with the bad bits taken out" - although the last Muse album was pretty awful IMO.
Prom, I post a bit on the "what are you listening to thread." I like all sorts but I suppose my main tastes are reggae/electronic orientated music. I'm partial to a bit of doom and gloom goth too and bit of soul music. I posted some Girls Aloud on there recently so you can take my views on music with a huge pinch of salt!

omg i LOVE The Smiths... they are the ultimate 80`s band...

I really like Queen. I can't see any similarity between them and Muse at all. I really like Muse too although I forced myself to hate them at first out of some sort of misguided loyalty to Radiohead who I thought Muse ripped off completely.
The Smiths were on of the greatest bands of the 80s, the prtnership of Morrissey and Marr was beautiful.
Morrissey's lyrics were and still are fantastic...
I dreamt about you last night
And I fell out of bed twice
You can pin and mount me like a butterfly
But take me to the haven of your bed
Was something that you never said
Two lumps please
You're the bee's knees
But so am I
Oh yes lyric master.
And those who think Morrissey was 'miserable' just doesn't get it. I find great humour in his words.
But sometimes I'd feel more fulfilled
Making Christmas cards with the mentally ill
I want to live and I want to Love
I want to catch something that I might be ashamed of
Frankly, Mr. Shankly, this position I've held
It pays my way and it corrodes my soul
Oh, I didn't realise that you wrote poetry
I didn't realise you wrote such bloody awful poetry, Mr. Shankly
BEAT THAT!
I'm right, everyone else (apart from those who agree with me) is, quite simply, wrong.
End of thread.

Not at all clever or awe inspiring.

Thats not much better either. In fact it could have been written by an eight year old
That's because you don't 'get' the smiths. You have to see it in its whole context. it's quite a jaunty song in its way. The Beatles would be proud.
As with most of the Smiths songs, it's all about Morrissey and according to some opinions on the internet, it's Morrissey's dig at an ex-boss (possibly a record exec) who read him some poetry thinking they were kindred spirits - Morrissey thought otherwise - no surprises there! It may also be about quitting the humdrum of a dull job to have a go at fame. Reaching for the stars Oscar Wilde style stuff that inspired Morrissey I guess. I always thought Mr Shankly in that song was a reference to the ex Liverpool FC manager!

I'm going to ask my senior Grandson, who is eight year old like, ter knock us up some poems.

I love The Smiths but I can see completely why some people don't. If it was The Beatles people were slagging off though I would be seriously

It does seem odd that whilst people on this thread debate the merits of The Smiths, elsewhere they debate the value of the Brits.

It's true then. Everyone everywhere hates everything. Ban all music immediately imo.
Ah! Music! Several threads worth of definition. I still stick with Frank's words, "there are only two kinds of music, Good and Bad!"

I am going to try and give the Smith's another go. This is because I want to understand what it is about them. I have taken on board some of the comments on this thread so will listen with an open mind.
To be fair I love Panic.
So we will see...
