seeing as a mum who's been papped breast feeding is going on the barricades, what's the general feeling about something so intimate and yet so needed?

It's an imotive subject, and I prefer to make my reply in the cold grey light of day

Is this just a pun in Scotland? (sorry, col! )
As long as it's discrete I think it's ok Cologne
Same here

I am confused. It's been a long day.

Well... if I tell you the Lomond Hills are known are known as 'The Paps of Fife' it might be a clue
Anyhoo, I think it's fine and she didn't deserve the carp on facebook, but I do object to the holier than thou attitude of all the girls getting together and breastfeeding on demand for the rally. Children should just be cherished, not become pawns.

Lightbulb moment.
They were discussing this on Daybreak on Friday, and I assume you are talking about the same thing.
If we are talking about the same case, I was infuriated, see my kind of rant in the 'stuff' thread.
The woman was sat on a step, discreetly feeding her baby. The angle of the picture you cannot even tell she is feeding the baby. So whoever took it, obviously walked past closer, saw her feeding, but (if they were so offended by it) didn't have the gumption to approach her and say so, but they chose to sneak across the road, take her picture and then post that picture online calling her a tramp/Trollop for having the audacity to feed her child,
But what really got to me were the effing twitter comments read out on Daybreak regarding this Woman Feeds Baby Shock story. Some knob had tweeted 'its a bodily function and like all bodily functions it should be done in private'. I searched and searched to try to find the tweet, because I wanted to ask this idiot if he, when he was doing his bodily function of eating (as the baby was) he hid away behind a closed curtain to do it?
Why should a woman feeding her baby have to hide away? I have seen many women feed their babies in public, and never once have they lobbed their tits out for all to see before letting the baby latch on.
It's a ridiculous argument, and one that really infuriates me.
Anyhoo, I think it's fine and she didn't deserve the carp on facebook,
I liked Josh Widdicombe's line about this on "The Last Leg". He basically said that if you take a photo in secret of someone you don't know breast feeding and then post it anonymously on Facebook, you're the one with the problem, not her...

Eugene, that's the other thing that pissed me off. I hope the woman in question takes the photo taker to court for it, I'm sure there must be some privacy law, or some law that will cover this issue.
Breastfeeding in this day and age is so bloody hard to establish, when there are much easier options out there and that's before you even think of trying to live a normal life in the big wide open world while being a human food bag.....
People are so ignorant to how hard it actually is (well it was for me)
She is very right to stand up and say eff off to who ever decided they were so cowardly offended by her hungry baby, to thrust her into the lime light in none to nice a circumstance!! (not sure if that's a phrase but I'm making it one!)

 Its friggin ridiculous, there is such a big thing about women not breast feeding their babies and then you get this crappy story, it's so annoying. It really makes my blood boil.

In the old days he'd be known as a peeping tom
I hate this whole thing where people think it's ok to take a picture of someone in public and share it across various internet sites.
There's been a facebook pic going round of a girl from round here. She is a gypsy and overweight but someone decided that meant it was ok to take a pic of her sat waiting for a taxi with her top riding up a little to expose her belly. The comments on the pic were vile and they even went as far as to comment on how her son looked (he was in a buggy beside her) even though he was sitting innocently eating an ice cream but apparently they were fair game. I would honestly hate for that girl to ever see that pic and the comments.
Anyway, back to the subject of breast feeding. The people who are offended by it really need to have a word with themselves. Yes it might be awkward seeing a woman breast feed for some but just look away, don;t whip out your camera and take a pic!

Ells, you are spot on with everything you have just posted. I bet the people who take these pictures and post them with the crappy comments would go ballistic if someone did that to them. I'm not religious, but I am a great believer in treat others as you would wish them to treat you.
And I loved your 'they need to have a word with themselves', one of my favourite sayings.
Tits/breasts/norks are designed for feeding, the sexuality of them is secondary.
First burning bras... now breast feeding in public!!!
Geez... where is it going to end?

You've had 50 years to get used to it.

I don't really see why breast feeding seems more acceptable if it's done discretely, tbh.
They should be able to breastfeed when and where they want/need to, without all the burying the baby under layers of scarves/cardigans, so as not to up set people who can't bear to see it happening.
Ridiculous!
I don't think there are any privacy laws if you are in public , at least I know that applies to those police shows when outraged parents kick off about their drunk and abusive 13 year old being filmed.
I hope she's alright!
Breastfeeding is natural and if the baby needs feeding then she has to feed him, what's the problem?
There are some right morons in this world, they should be ashamed of themselves for this

I agree with, Ells.
Quite frankly .... i refuse to do it !!!
I have probably come to this debate a little late, but in this instance I have recent experience to draw on.
I have over the last few years seen more women in Sheffield breastfeeding in public. But more regularly I have noticed in my regular coffee shop a young woman breastfeeding her baby whilst she enjoys drinks with her other toddler.
She seems to have the whole thing down to a very slick process and uses a light shaul (sp) draped over one shoulder and the baby's head so as to obscure the breastfeeding.
I have not noticed any staring or adverse reactions on the 3 or 4 occasions I have seen her.
My understanding is that it is very good for the baby to be breastfed and I would encourage and support anyone who wished to do it.
More to the 'point' . . . aherm.
Are we talking perky or flaccid?

It was Costa , wasn't it?
So its a need thing - little baba boo needs his feed?
So can i - if i'm bursting and 'need' to go ... rush behind a bush to have a wee wee ... and not expect to be arrested?
I agree with Baz. I've not got a problem with it at all (as long as it's not a 'Harvey Pincher'- type scenario, that is - wouldn't want to see that in Marks and Spencer's cafe)

Gawd you are coming across as right creepy in this thread , mate.

It's a baby ..................it's a natural instinct.
Grow up ........if I may say - that's a pretty stupid comparison and I thought even you'd see that
Well the problem with some people and breast feeding is showing areas that are naturally covered.
However if i needed to 'go' whilst out (which i have never done) i was wondering where we all stood?
Both deal with, what opponets would say, is indescent exposure.
Hence the comparison
It's not really for me to pass judgement over. It's a natural part of life.
The point about going to the toilet is facile. A baby needs a feed when it needs a feed. If we human beings were all incontinent then I'd expect we'd all have to walk around with a bucket and it would be the social norm to crap in public.

Are you actually for real? You are honestly comparing breastfeeding in public with urinating in a public place? The reason Urinating in public is illegal is because it's a hygiene issue It's not like a lactating woman covers a pavement etc in milk and expects to people walk through it......

I'm intrigued to how you came to this conclusion
