Now - I can see their point (do they really know what every Joe Bloggs is up to) but when you consider CCTV as a mass surveillance technique it's pretty awesome at preventing serious crime.
Or at least detecting it

Don't believe so. Washing is hung on the line to dry, but people were hanged.
