Re the swimming Zaylee.... and kids getting on your nerves....is there not an adult swim? there are adult only sessions every day at my pool, and even the 'family' swims are OK, as parents take their young kids and are mostly in the shallow end. The public ones are the worst, but its the kids aged about 9 to 15 that are the most troublesome..
So are there not different sessions?
There are even women-only sessions at mine
Mine too Demantoid. Two a week, on Monday and Thursday nights... My hubby says it's 'sexist' and 'not fair,' but for one thing: the last time he went swimming (other than when we are away on a family holiday,) was when he was 25 - (nearly 20 years ago,) and also, I have said to him many times 'contact them and complain, and if enough people do it, maybe they will put some 'men only' sessions on...' But he never contacts them. So what can ya do eh? No good moaning about stuff and doing sod-all about it...
My local library has the kid's stuff downstairs - with lots of story telling sessions and interactive stuff for them.
The idea is to try and engage young children into books, rather than TV, computers and games.
If adults want quiet (and I do!), the upstairs is a strict hush-hush zone.
Works for us

I used to go to a yoga session at my local leisure centre at the same time the women-only swim was on, and they'd draw blinds between it and the cafe windows. From what I could gather, it was either larger ladies or Muslim ladies, all of whom might have felt self-conscious in front of blokes.
I'm sure they'd have put on men-only sessions if anyone asked!

Very true.... it's no good moaning about stuff, but not getting off your arse and doing something about it. Many men (including my hubby) moan about the 'women only' session being sexist, but never ever ever complain about it to the folk who RUN the swimming baths! And as I said, my hubby never goes swimming now anyway! Only when we are on holiday... so I doubt if many men would go to 'men only' sessions anyway.quote:Originally posted by Demantoid:I used to go to a yoga session at my local leisure centre at the same time the women-only swim was on, and they'd draw blinds between it and the cafe windows. Really?
Dear god, chaps, no bouncing on the high board..
I am DEFINATELY complaining to my swimming pool now; WE don't have NAKED NIGHTS?!! Mind you, I would probably put most men off coming back if they saw me in the nuddyquote:Originally posted by Trix-ster:

Yeh they had to put paper over the windows to stop the perves haha
He said it was only really saggy people that went but once you saw one saggy person you got bored, and it was a boring shift. They had rides though...that I can only imagine would hurt if you were nekkid

Oh dear LOL I think folk get past a certain age, then dont give a shit. LOL. When people are younger (less than 30) they are very self concious and loads of young lasses think they are fat when they probably look really good..quote:Originally posted by Trix-ster:

I suppose it's the same crowd that go naturist. Saggy bits everywhere, and not a firm set of pecs and bott in sight
I wouldn't like to hear the racket if one of them got 'caught' on the water tube...

the old fashioned shhhhhhhhhhh places went out 40 years ago - maybe the best place to study is one's own home then - I go swimming and I hate it when the pool is full of kids splashing and jumping in etc but hey ho thats the way it goes - they have as much right as me to be there - if I win the lottery I will have me own pool and not have to put up with other people - if ya use a public facility tho, sadly you have to put up with the people - whether it's libraries, swimming pools or whatever
That's simply not true. I wasn't going to libraries 40 years ago, yet I clearly remember signs telling people to be quiet and stern librarians sorting them out if they weren't.
It's only very recently that they have suddenly become caught up in the 'cult of the child', where what the little darlings want takes precedence over what others would prefer.
Libraries, as you say in an earlier post, have byelaws - although you claim these don't cover overly noisy children. But I'm willing to bet the rules about disturbing other users would be invoked pretty sharpish if it was an adult running about and making a racket.
the days of stern librarians are from a bygone era just like the days of strict school teachers and respect for the policeman - all from a bygone era - byelaws dont specify an age - everybody is classed the same - I cant remember the last time I seen a sign in a library demanding silence - even the signs asking people not to use their mobile phones have long been removed -

yeah there are adult only sessions but not at the times when I prefer to swim however, Ive recently become a member of a private pool and it there are ten people swimming that is a busy night so I am now well pleased and the only kids are those with parents - unaccompanied kids are not allowed in

no idea of whether the OP pays council tax or not - could be a student being supported by mummy n daddy - very much like the little darlins making the racket - they all have a right to use the library regardless of whether they pay council tax - unless they are causing damage or being abusive they really arent breaking any laws are they
If they are running riot and screeching the place down (as OP suggests) they are spoiling it for other library users. Any library worth visiting would have rules about unacceptable behaviour. You don't have to break the law to be out of order.
What you seem to be saying is that as long as they aren't breaking any criminal laws, whatever they want, goes. Why should what kids want be paramount?
In deed libraries do have rules - they are called bye laws and a children running doesnt contravene them - the OP openly admits to playing an MP3 player so hardly a pargon of virtue when it comes to being respectful of othe r library users - I never said that what kids want is paramount - what I said is that libraries are for everybody - not just people like the OP who says he/she is reading but is also on this forum and listening to an MP3 player at the same time -
i can turn down my mp3 player, i can also do what i want on my study time, but kids should still not be allowed to run riot in a public library..yeah kids should be incouraged to read, but not at the cost off other peoples peace and quiet.

the days of a SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH library and long since gone - some libraries do have quiet areas where peace and tranquility reign but the main areas are generall quite noisy and what you have to realise is that not everybody who goes into a library is there to study/learn - the reason for entering a library are many and varied. most of the libraries I am involved in actively encourage children to particpate in whatever activities are organised within
Them they should have a seperate area for the kids, say outside on the grass maybe.
they are quite happy - you are the one complaining - maybe out on the grass would suit you better
Why should the kids' happiness come first? I imagine the OP's council tax is helping pay for the upkeep of this library, and he's entitled to enjoy it without being overly disturbed.

I am a self sustained student, i pay council tax but thats not the issue.
The issue is screeming kids in a library, with the screeming kids mother letting them run riot.
Libraries should be peaceful tranquil places for reading and learning. If the council wants to use my council tax money to build a library like creche then they can take it and please themselves, but i will stand up for my right to be able to study and learn in a space that is provided for that very purpose.
if you want peace and tranquility you should turn off your MP3 player and/or study at home - like I said before - libraries are no longer the haven of quiet you seem to think they should be - an academic library possibly but not a public library
so basically what you are condoning is public libraries turning into unruly creches rather than a place to learn and read or do research

nope never mentioned the word creche - like Ive stated over n over again - libraries are for everybody - you seem to think your need is more important than that of children - you can hardly say you were learning/researching when you were moanin on a forum and listening to an MP3 player which you were asked to turn down/off - and thereby lies the real problem I think - I would say you were a bit miffed that somebody asked you to be a bit more considerate cos regardless of whether you have headphones it can still be heard - but you seem to put your own spin on anything I say so just carry on regardless
What if i was to say i didn't have an mp3 player, i wasn't on a computer, i was sitting trying to read a book and a little 4 year old was running from wall to wall screeching while his mum, tried to pasify her two year old, would you then think it was ok behaviouir to be allowed to continue in a public library ?
Oh ffs... go to Waterstones and buy your effing books and read then in the middle of a deserted field..

but you have already stated that you were asked to turn down the aforementioned MP3 player by the mother of the noisy child so if now you are saying you didnt have an MP3 player, maybe you were never in the library in the first place, maybe you dreamt it all up, maybe you really should take tupps advice and go to waterstones and sit in a field with your purchases - but there could be cows a-mooing and birds a-twittering and ya might even get kids playing - ohhhhhhhhhhh perish the thought
Guess not, i think it comes down to common decency and respect for others, the kid was learning diddly squat and should really have been removed with his mother from the said premises, out of respect for the other users. thats my opinion anyway.

ahh you are back, sorry tupps, needs must an all that..
To be fair zaytee, you weren't at the library so you don't know what the noise was like, yeah i teething child or a crying baby you can respect that and put up with it, but a 4 year old running riot and being allowed to do so, just , for me anyway, just should not be allowed to happen... i turned my mp3 player off when asked to turn it down just out of respect to the other library users, the mother should have taken the hint and left with hthe children she obviously couldn't control out of the same respect.
