Yes, yes I will.

I was even asked to turn down my mp3 player by the mother of tarzan on acid.

I, I, I nearly snapped my book shut in temper.

Yep, and there are a surprising number of parents who will take their spawn to the supermarket for a good ear-splitting screeching session. And blithely wander round letting their lil darlings bug the crap out of everyone else. I have been known to put down my basket and leave because I can't stand the noise that the brats make Mad

your idea of a library is very old fashioned and out dated - a library is for all the community not just people who suposedly want to learn after all, you are sat here on a forum so where is the 'learning' element in what your are doing. If you want to study then go to an academic library belonging to a college or uni but a public lib is to serve everyone and children are just as entitled to use the library as you - libraries are not just for reading, they are for the sharing of information and reading is only a very small way in which information can be relayed in this day and age - but then you will already know that cos you are sat at a comp in the lib !!!

But what behaviour is acceptable, is allowing your child to run around screeming like a mad banshee acceptable ?

Should the mother have been asked to quieten the child down or leave ?

Obviously libraries are for learning and for the community to use, what they aren't for is for children to run around like it's play time at the zoo while the mother takes the weight of her legs...Or are they ?

Libraries are many things to many people Nod

the days of a SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH library and long since gone - some libraries do have quiet areas where peace and tranquility reign but the main areas are generall quite noisy and what you have to realise is that not everybody who goes into a library is there to study/learn - the reason for entering a library are many and varied. most of the libraries I am involved in actively encourage children to particpate in whatever activities are organised within

I think part of children's experience of joining in should also include learning how to behave and not disturb other people.
Or are the days of simple good manners long gone as well?

disturb other people from doing what tho - like I said before, the days of the shhhhhhhhh library have long since gone - I agree that children should be taught respect and courtesy but this should start in the home and then put into practice in public places if and when necessary -

Why should the kids' happiness come first? I imagine the OP's council tax is helping pay for the upkeep of this library, and he's entitled to enjoy it without being overly disturbed.

no idea of whether the OP pays council tax or not - could be a student being supported by mummy n daddy - very much like the little darlins making the racket - they all have a right to use the library regardless of whether they pay council tax - unless they are causing damage or being abusive they really arent breaking any laws are they

I am a self sustained student, i pay council tax but thats not the issue.

The issue is screeming kids in a library, with the screeming kids mother letting them run riot.

Libraries should be peaceful tranquil places for reading and learning. If the council wants to use my council tax money to build a library like creche then they can take it and please themselves, but i will stand up for my right to be able to study and learn in a space that is provided for that very purpose.
