I think he was just showing common courtesy that's all. No ulterior motive.
I suspect he would do it whoever it was.

Beaver was very kind to him when he was still a mole and he got upset because people were having a go at him during the quiz. I thought she was nice then.
Presumably Mario still thinks she is.

But why did he go over when Caoimhe could clearly be heard saying those terrible things about Dave. She was horrendous and certainly didn't warrant any kindess for her disgraceful outburst.
