9ft stag the 'Emperor of Exmoor' returns for start of the mating season, Exmoor, Devon

The Exmoor Emperor. He was reportedly killed for his antlers in Devon about a fortnight ago but news has only been released today. It was during the time of the 'rut' so he hasn't been able to procreate this year. He weighed 300lb and stood at 9 feet tall to the tip of his antlers.

It is estimated Emperor's mounted head could fetch as much as £2,000 if properly stuffed. It seems his size was also his downfall making him a target.

Technically the landowner was within his rights to allow the shoot but imo such a majestic creature should have been allowed to live out a long and happy life as he was unique due to his size.

Is there really place in today's society for blood sport of this nature? For me personally I'm totally against it. I understand the need to cull species to stop them rampaging and ruining the countryside but it appears in this case he was shot as a trophy and I'm appalled that people would spend thousands to shoot an animal like this and that landowners are so greedy they'll take money from the highest bidder

I agree. I've just been listening to a debate on this on Radio 2, and while I understand that they have to control the deer population. In the case of this particular one, I think he should have been left alone and allowed to pass on his genes.

I'm afraid it's all down to who owns the land. There are a couple of shooting areas further out in the country from me but I have absolutely no idea why people are so fascinated with guns. Take the toys from the boys!! ..... and girls of course.

I just about understand why deer have to be culled, but this wasn't a cull, this was a trophy shoot. Disgusting, although it's marginally better than seeing a stag frightened near to death on a roof top, which happened in the same area a few years ago.

Makes me sick that people do this for 'sport'....needless, such a magnificent creature. At least when Fishermen catch the 'trophy' fish, they weigh them and release them....i don't understand why anyone would do this, let alone why anyone would want a Stags Head mounted on a wall......
