True, never thought of that,as much as I say yes to the cane I doubt I could actually DO it myself to a kid! I still agree with the cane/Belt being brought back though. Didn't know it was only abolished in 1987. I started school in 1985 and don't remember it, unless I was just a little angel or it was only used for the older kids!

Most of the time the best solution would be to cane the parents I think. It's their responsibility to raise their children but today they're leaving it to everyone else to do it. Some children just act rotten no matter how good the parent but the majority of the time if mothers and fathers can't be bothered then neither can the children.

Mind you I believe in fining and prosecuting parents when they willingly allow their kids to victimise innocent people just so they're not under their feet in the house. Most of the problems we have today with adolescent behaviour would clear up in no time......not altogether but at least some normalcy would return and less victims would suffer.

I was caned at school Frowner my crime was to be seen by a teacher smoking a cigarette out of school hours but still in uniform, 2 miles away from the school, seems unbelievable these days, leading up to it was the worst bit, when it was going to happen and was said to me "this is going to hurt me more than it hurts you" I thought the hell it is lol, I was caned across the wrists and yes it did hurt Crying

no but discipline should be brought back, when i was at school (and it wasn't that long ago) and i got a letter home from the school regarding my behaviour my parents would be on the side of the school, too often now you hear that in the same situation the parents think the school is wrong and go in all guns blazing, claiming little johnny/jenny is an angel and the teacher hasn't got a clue.

No. What this is about is in my day you could get the cane for doing badly say in an exam where as nowadays kids beat each other up and not a lot happens. Forget failing exams, would kids nowadays have more respect for other people and their property if the cane was brogght back for bullying, vandelism, stealing etc.

haven't read thread yet and voted no.

when a kid can laugh at and know what it can get away with, no amount of caning will suffice.

it will just get the teacher sacked for not caning properly. you know the type of thing, two inches out of 'approved zone'.
most probably half a dozen agencies will be involved and the kids human rights violation will cost the taxpayer a years worth of school repairs.

Yes exactly as in my day as stated earlier you could get the cane for doing badly in an exam etc which does seem unjust. However, take a school bully that bullies and bullies and makes other kids lives a misery.. Well should that bully get the cane?

No. Yes there should be levels of punishment I totally agree with that, but from my experience violence of any sort does not change anything.

I am not so sure really. Everyone knows that bullies are the biggest cowards going, if they were caned or had the knowledge that they would be if they bullied then would this not deter a vast number of them?

I don't think so, caning is a very instant punishment, over fairly quickly. Sometimes the way to make an impression is to do something that has a more lasting effect.

Yes but as I remember it my backside was sore for ages after, did you not find it to be the same for you after you had the cane? I think bullies would hate such pain.

Mine was across the hand and yes it did hurt for a while but wasn't a deterrent in any way. I got into trouble a lot and spent a lot of time in detention etc so I didn't have to go home. It was the threat of being taken off the swimming team that made me pull my horns in a bit.

Across the hand, did it feel as though your hand was broken after. After getting it on the backside I always wanted to scream to ease the pain afterwards.

I know I couldn't use my hand much for a couple of days afterwards, probably why they did it on my left hand, couldn't use it as an excuse not to do my homework Shake Head

So did they ask you to put out your hand that you did not write with? How many did you get? With me it was just bend over.

Five strokes, nah they didn't ask me they checked with my teacher before I got there. Would have lied otherwise Moon

No but there should be more punishments allowed these days they are not allowed to do much to punish bad behavior. They get even excluded for not going to school Roll Eyes Caning is the extreme end of didapline. I do think the courts should have the option though.

When I was at school pupils were rarly exculded the term wasn't even around disapline was given by loss of breaks, being kept back after school etc. Bad behavior in PE could result is having to hold a medicine ball level with your headin front of you or running round the school playing field while everyone else played a game.

Caneing just proves hitting those smaller makes them do what you want them to

I agree with you Neil, we seem to have gone from one extreme to another. It doesn't help that everyone is screaming rights left right and centre. As parents we should recognise that all children deserve a good education, and maybe open our eyes a bit to our own children and see that they are not angels all the time. Perhaps if parents backed the schools a bit more we would have less trouble.
