Now whilst I have said yes I do feel it should only be used under very strict guidlines and the punishment should fit the crime.

We had a teacher who broke a boys fingers he was told he could never cane anyone else. From then on he threw the black board rubber at us and his aim was spectacular.
That same teacher had to send boys to the headmaster and he had to deal with the punishment. I do think that it would stop all this you can't do anything otherwise we will sue you issue with kids today

no, violence against children is wrong, even if they're little shytes.

children who are raised properly at home shouldn't need discipline of that type. unfortunately not all kids have a good start but i don't think beating them is the solution.
yup Also when I was at school it was the belt and there were misscarrages of justice on a daily basis. One boy from a "bad family" was constantly belted for minor deeds that lets say, middle class children got away with. Frowner

No, very often children that are very badly behaved in school, especially Primary and early Secondary are having problems at home...hitting them at school would'nt be fair.

I think in Primary school the Parents of the children should be held more accountable for really disruly children.

OK then.
Let's bring the cane back into schools, but instead of caning the kids, have their parents in and cane them. Big Grin

I got caned at school...off cannabis lol.

I voted Yes but now I think about it more, and there's some good arguments against it above, I'd change my vote to No.
If they get away with murder at home they're likely to behave badly at school. Or if they get harshly treated at home they're likely to take it out on other kids.
Same can be said about teachers too, while there are some fantastic teachers out there, there are also some horrid ones too. Mad

I think the answer to that is at my schools it was always the one teacher that gave the cane/slipper. Head or deputy headmaster, that should eliminate the problem of a bad teacher doing it just because they are in a mood.

Would've hated my headteacher to have caned me, especially if he'd used his wallet. How much do they get paid? 70/80 thousand? Ghost

What does a salary have to do with being caned?? Confused

I meant his wallet hitting me would hurt more cos its heavier, no one ever gets my jokes, better start making better ones lol. Smiler

Poof is in the pudding I say. In my school days we had pupils that were bad whatever the threat but most students were scared. Its not so much the caning as the shame it brought. Nowadays anything goes so what would be the point really. I think its far too late now, society has got to change in many ways. There are ways of teaching respect for example, a pride in your school, a pride in what you achieve. I could go on but I dont think now it will ever change.

Exactly...the 'Shame' it brought........the thought of you're parents finding out (I am to young to remember the cane) that you had been in trouble at school, in the park, at the shops...was way worse than the cane (or any other punishment.

Parents need to Parent the children.
Syd
I remember the cane at school, and for the most part it did deter alot of boys from misbehaving, there were always some that didn't care either way. I also think pupils did respect teachers and authorities more then but whether that was due to fear of punishment or not I don't know...The cane was abolished in 1987...Have things got worse since then??

In my experience, yes.

Low level disruption is at an all time high in my 30+ years career. You know, the odd whistle, no book or pen, silly calling out, the odd missile sailing through the air, after asking a student to stop talking having to deal with the answer, 'Why?', the time wasting, 'It wasn't me,' when you know damn well it was.

Example from today. Year 11 student-GCSE exams days away. This lad called me a bully because I asked him to start work, stop, squealing, stop making farmyard noises, stop intimidating other students, excuse himself when he made a grossly exaggerated burp, etc etc etc. When he called me a bully, the rest of the class fell about laughing at him. Did anyone learn much? Doubtful.

Not a job for the faint hearted, and I teach in a good school.

Can't wait to meet some of these fast track bankers Wink

In don't agree with the cane, never did. As I posted earlier, violence breeds violence.

What I want is the senior team at my school to enforce a zero tolerance policy. Too many things just pass without notice while we, the teachers, are still being checked up on to show we have ticked all the boxes.

Kids respond to firm, but fair and enforced rules.
