Blimey! for once I agree with PP's opening post I can't really understand why this is a controversial thread to be honest - why on earth should anyone moving to a country where a different language was spoken not be expected to learn enough of the language of the country where they have chosen to live to be able to get by? I agree that people who move to another country as refugees couldn't be expected to learn another language before they arrive, but I think there should be an expectation that they learn some basics of the language within a couple of months.

Doesn't automatically follow that I am a newbie. That's just people making assumptions. Just because someone doesn't post much or you haven't noticed them post before, doesn't mean they are a newbie. You have no idea when I joined. Many people join and simply read the posts for a while and don't post.

Wolfie - that doesn't exactly work though as Cologne is on there for some reason! We've had a Charli Cupcake here for ages but I somehow think that this Cupcake and her are not the same person.
As to the learning language debate, well if you are going to settle permanently in a country then you should make an effort to learn the language imo. It just makes your life easier.
Btw we do have a language requirement of living here. I don't know the exact details but I know when non EU footballers come to Arsenal we give them English lessons as there is some sort of test.

Is being called a newbie a bad thing? Just an observation
It's the word compulsory. If they started examining people Then I fear that I would fail. One remembers a conversation between Mrs Jer and an Iraqi short order cook in Germany. He was dead dead educated and they discussed all sorts of grammatical and poetry crap. He knew what articles, pronouns, adverbs and, iambic pentameters were. I always have to ask.

I tell you, you'll be so surprised at what comes back to you! Hopefully it's not the memories of a slap on the hand coz you can't remember your haon, do, tri's

Now that Cologne has become Cologne 1, would that not technically count as a new registration on the new members page?

Dunno how it works Growly, I was just making an observation

I'll have you know madam I can count in English and Irish, hmmmm indeed I know my prayers in both and some other basic bits and bobs....I am dreading when it comes to written though, all the slender vowel malarky, yep as usual I'm thinking far ahead aren't I
if you have any problems writing you can use google to translate it for you
I don't think it should be compulsory it would be hard to follow up on that anyway tbh.. but I can't imagine why if you chose to go live in a country that spoke a language different to your mother tongue you wouldn't make any attempt to learn it.. it doesn't make sense at all.. for work for general day to day living for health emergencies. .loads of reasons..
and that encompasses all whether they are refugees or have chosen to emigrate or become an immigrant. . it doesn't cost anything to learn a language so that is not a factor. .you just get out there and start communicating with the locals., ,use your hands to point to things facial expressions to question what the word is . .listen to conversations.. start off with a basic phrasebook and go from there.. you don't need to pay for lessons.. .and it's a fantastic thing to have more than one language under your belt too..
It annoys me no end when Brits emigrate to places like Spain, as an example, live in Brit communities abroad and make no effort to learn the language ...they set up those naff Fish and chip and burger joint shops... completely ignore the local culture and wonderful fresh food available in those climates....[not all but a lot of them do] why bother going abroad at all? if you want the weather go to Devon or Cornwall the weather is mild there.. the Brits are the worst for expecting everybody to speak their language and not bothering to learn a new one for themselves..

and I am going to do a Croc too. .four or five posts into this thread someone starts attacking the OP for no reason other than they don't like what they wrote. .ie a question was posed not a statement.. then more pile in with attacks. .
sort yourselves out, tis ridiculous. .or step away from a thread if it gets on yer tits.. you know a PP thread will be contentious... then to attack another FM [who hadn't even entered the thread at that point] but then when they did was pointing out the obvious bad behaviour you've displayed is foolhardy... makes ya all look like a bunch of bullies and validates PP's opinion that she is ganged up on.. well done peeps..
and attack me too if you want for stating the bleeding obvious. .bothered? much? nah

Are we still doing Spinal Tap quotes?
My favourite is:
"I do not think that the problem was that the band was 'down', I think that the problem may have been that there was a Stonehenge Monument on stage that was in danger of being crushed...by a dwarf!"
