compulsory for a person who emigrates to a foreign country to learn the language of that country? It really bugs me when people want to live in a foreign country when they have absolutely no inention of learning the language - I actually find it rather ignorant - I was just wondering what other people's thoughts on this were??

Thats fair enough, I do think that they should have a good grasp of a language before living in a country. However as we are English speaking it is easer for us to dictate what others should do as English is the 2nd most spoken language in the world. What you must remember is that people often emigrate for a better standard of life as they are on the breadline in their native countries, they often can't afford food never mind language lessons.
No.

It is but I would also expect any British person moving abroad to learn the language of the ountry they are moving to.

Fair point however I believe tht anyone who is not able to learn the language prior to moving should be made to do so once here.

Yes. If some one is emigrating I agree with you, they should make an effort to learn the language. Even if you go some where on holiday I always think it's polite to even know a word or two and a few basics before you go. I think it's mannerly
Whoa Slim, to be fair she said if some one was emigrating, not a refugee What's so narrowminded about learning the language of the place you're going to?
If I were a migrant to a country because my own country had gone tits up - the last thing I would be worried about is learning their language!
tbh PP I find your views very narrow minded & very provocative!
Not a good quality imo!
I will say this only once in this thread and from this point on all similar posts will be ignored. Should you wish to discuss the topic at hand I will happily do so however any attacks on me personally will be ignored and reported to the mods.

Ii agree. That's why I live in an English speaking country, although when they start speaking Irish to me i do do < that
yep,
i would
mind you a lotta people speak english in other countries
but i'd try to learn the language a abit before i went somewhere
and hope to pick it up as i went along
common courtesy (sp)
its all good in the hood..

Moonbeams Never go to Paris without trying to speak french
It depends really and tbf I think most migrants do try and learn even basic language, are there actually statistics that immigrants refuse to learn the native language, I'm shocked if that's the case.
Of course people should learn at least some of the language even if they don't manage to get fluent.
It's your basic manners isn't it?

Can you clarify your original post PP? Do you mean people emigrating from this country to another, or from another country to this one?

'Victim hat' goes on again. The COMMENTS that you made PP, are what slimfern said are provocative and narrow minded, and it was not a personal attack against YOU. You love to put your 'always controversial' points but then cry off 'victim, personal attack, mods I'm being bullied' when someone dares to challenge you. Don't post if you don't want to be challenged!
As for the question - There are many many millions of people who move to different countries for various reasons, and not everyone learns the language of that country.. for different reasons.. As mentioned, some people are more worried about paying their rent and feeding their kids, never mind trying to sort out language lessons. AND There are people who have lived in countries for many generations who have never learned the language, including people from England in other countries. It's not always that easy to learn a foreign language and EVERY race is 'guilty' of not learning the country's language. Maybe in an ideal world, everyone would learn the language, but it isn't always practicable .. some people can't even read or write properly. So to say people are IGNORANT because they don't learn the language IS narrow minded and rude.

I dont think it should be compulsary, but learning the language is necessary, for everyday living and its good manners too.

My brother has lived there for as long as I can remember - he is fluent from a university degree- they do like you to at least try - but in all honesty with the dogpoo on the streets & the shoddy shops, I don't know that I would bother tbh!Would bother speaking French or visiting?
No

Don't worry Pirate, Croc will be in to defend PP soon. As per usual... If PP said Monday was Tuesday and Wednesday was no day at all. Croc would jump to her defence and agree.

The spanish are great, they'll always help you out. The only problem is when they try their school English on you that they haven't spoken in about 20 years. It'd be like me going to Spiddal and trying to speak to the locals

it's a very difficult language to learn, but if Eamonn is speaking it to you, you should pick it up with him. It's a brilliant idea. I'd love to send Finn to one.
While we're on the subject of the aul Gaeilge, did you hear about Gerry Adams becoming a Baron?

I did do it at school Temps so have a basic grasp but given that was decades years ago it would be easier to learn with him, truth be told I know I'll be really proud when he is able to chat away in it.
Adams a baron now please don't go there,he'll be getting knighted next.

I remember one summer sitting on the bus home, listening to all the chatter when two girls behind me starting speaking in Irish ( I love listening to it) the whole bus went quiet trying to listen in and figure out what they were saying.
I try and hide when my 10 year old nephew takes out his Irish homework.

Between you & me Temps I would agree that a person emigrating to another country with forethought & preparation would at least learn hello/goodbye/please & Thankyou. But there are a good many that emigrate to flee a life of horridness - yes ! they wait - & when they do get to move to a country of respectable calm (like ours) they are so relieved !
It riles me that we should expect them to speak English!
I grew up in the Air force - We didn't have to speak the language of the country in which we lived !
Tis a free world! imo! We all own it!

I agree with you Slim. I wouldn't expect a refugee or asylum speaker to speak the language but if some one is arriving to a foreign country out of free choice, then I believe they should make the effort. Of course it's a free world, but it just seems like manners to me.
I am not sure that it should be compulsory but I think it should certainly be encouraged, as much for the person who has emigrated as for anyone...
i would if i was gonna live elsewhere in europe etc..
Me too.
Me too.
