They messed up by making inappropriate loans. They have to get their cash back from somewhere. Are you in a position where you can change accounts? The best guy for advice is Martin Lewis.

It's apparently bank-wide grrr. Closing my account

banks seem to forget with out our money they will have nothing! yet they charge us high interest when we need loans and only pay us tiny amounts in interest on what we save! we should be charging them for all the money they borrowed to bail them out

LLF, I'm with Nationwide - try looking at them, they might be different cos they're a building society

Stay well clear of Barclays then LLF....  I reckon their staff uniform is a black eye mask, stripey t-shirt and swag bag!

Oh, and if you go into Barclays to try to sort anything out... before you know it they have you sat in the middle of the shop floor, infront of some over made up 20 something bint.. they call a 'personal banker'... asking you what you spend per month on clothes, heating etc!!   (I kid you not... we told the bird three times we weren't interested in her budgeting our finances for us... we just wanted to re'arrange our individual accounts into a joint account with two subsidiary accounts once we were married).  

It took us another 20 minutes then to tell her we did NOT want Barclays insurance for anything, life, buildings, identity theft etc!

We never did get the joint account sorted out...  we both still have our individual accounts and have a joint one with Alliance Leicester (who are better than Barclays.... most of the time).

I had the same kind of thing and changed banks to the Nat West, Halifax have got too big for their boots lately.

I only use the bank to pay standing orders, like car repayments, insurance and mortgage payments, any other money I have goes onto a pay as you go debit card and I use that, when it's gone, it's gone simple as that. 

My hubby is with Barclays a business account as he is self employed and they are a pain as well, always sending stuff through trying to get us to change to a different account, have a mortgage through them, when we are perfectly happy with the West Brom Building Society (kept local!!).

It's funny how all these companies are set up with the apparent intent of helping us with our money, yet when it comes down to it, they'll come up with as many ways as possible to get more money from us as quickly as they can.

Of course it's also funny how the same speed and efficiency isn't reserved for situations where we are taking money from them...

I have just had a letter from the Halifax telling me if I go overdrawn the fee is £15 previsouly it was £38 so for the £15 is better but I still do not think that this should be payble

All banks are horrid if you ask me.

I'm with NatWorst, and they are constantly sending me letters to say they've raised my credit card limit  without me asking them to - it's now at £9,600.
There's no way I'm going to blow nine grand on my plastic, no matter how hard they try to persuade me to get myself neck-deep in debt to them.

I first opened my account with them when I was a student and it's funny - when I went even a quid overdrawn then, they went nuts.

The Halifax have a few different accounts, I changed mine over with them yest and they were really good explaining the differences to me. One of the accounts allows you to have a £300 overdraft with no charges at all, so it might be worth seeing if another account is more suitable. I think you have to be able to pay in £1000 or more a month through through your salary or whatever, also they pay £5 each month when you pay in the money in for 12 months. It doesnt matter if you draw the £1000 out the day after or whatever. Hope that makes sense, but I got a good deal with them!

They kept doing that to me with my credit card until I complained, then six months later sent me a letter telling me that unless I used my Credt Card in the next six weeks they were going to cancel it!! Twats Nest as I like to call them!

when i pay cash into my barclays business account they charge me 08.5 pence in the £.

so now i pay it into my pesonal account and transfer it across.

then i get accosted by some  12 year old schoolboy with biro marks up his arms, demanding to know if he can'help ' me save money on my accounts so i say' yes you can, stop charging me money for doing bugger all, ta very much'

succinct and pertinent.

That's their new name as far as I'm concerned now.

We've hardly any problems with HSBC.


The police had to watch one of the cash withdrawal boxes in town a while back, fraudsters putting in chips, stealing the details of the account and taking the cash.

Yeah.... I've seen this Barclay clone as well!

I rang the poor girl fuming and made her listen over the phone while I cut the card up with a pair of scissors, when I'd finished I told her the card was gone and I didnt give a shit what she did with the rest of the account.


The funny thing was, I realised after that I had a £10.40 credit on the account cos I used to pay it by dd and in the bank and the last payment I made I had calculated it wrong! It had been there for about 12 months so I had to sheepishly ring them back and ask them to make sure I got the money back
