Some people take it way too far....(my niece in essex with her ÂĢ300 dress and limo...i told my sister she was an idiot but it seem it was a case of keeping up with everyone else)

Thankfully at my kids school they do something (a graduation ceremony) but not over the top....My daughter and most of her friends just bought nice normal dresses that they could wear again then a load of them went out for a meal after.

Ditto at just walking away.I was always in the the last 20 to 30 of my year because I studied Art and those exams were always at the the latter end .I'm in Scotland and our terms are different to England etc.My "Highers" were mid to end May.After the last exam we just buggered off, even though the school term finished around the third week of June.
We did have school "Discos"..Christmas etc,.

I have 2 daughters - 24 and 20.
They both went to the same school.

The 24 year old had an end of school ball - very lovely, a boat on the Thames in London.

By the time the 20 year old got to that stage it was called a Prom.
She had one at 16 and one at 18!!!
She and her friends all went in and hired a limo and she did have new dresses each time.
BUT there was none of this OTT nonsense from any of the parents  - well apart from one who got a professional photographer in to photo his little darling..

I abhor the word "prom". It is an Americanism that we could do without.

I cant stand this prom malarkey. I cant get over how all of a sudden we have massive massive proms, it sort of just sneaked up on us. Did the whole country decide in secret that next year should be PROMS

I had a school 'dance' strip the willow, dashing white sergeant Canadian barn dance, and when you were feeling dead adventurous ....Canadian barn dance PROGRESSIVE  with a proper band. A bag of crisps and a carton of juice at the interval and it never did me any harm. *twitch*

I blame the 90s and early noughties when we had all these American teen angsty soaps on like the OC, One Tree Hill and even Buffy,

All of those had proms and suddenly we are Prom mad!

Its stupid, One of my friends is the manager of a really posh dress shop that does ball gowns. The stories she tells of the girls and their proms Like people hiring helicopters to arrive in, and hotel suites for their kids and their friends on the night. No, i'll be doing NONE of that.  If little gypsie does have a prom, which i dont think she will, i will drop her off in my micra wearing a 'new look' special.
