Strictly Come Dancing 2012 bosses have reportedly signed their oldest ever contestant, former childrenβs TV presenter Johnny Ball, for the new series.
The Sun claims that an βenthusiasticβ Johnny β who fronted several science-themed shows throughout the 80s β has already impressed in training.
At 74, he is two years ahead of the previous record holder Paul Daniels, who was 72 when he took to the dancefloor in 2010.
A source said: βJohnny might be 74 but heβs got some puff. He has looked after himself over the years and is really game. It would be foolish to write him off as some old duffer just there for laughs, like John Sergeant.
βHeβs been showing off some moves in training that would put much younger celebs to shame.β
If he joins the line-up, Johnny will end up appearing alongside daughter Zoe Ball, who was recently confirmed as the new presenter of spin-off show Strictly Come Dancing: It Takes Two.
Zoe was previously a contestant on the 2005 series, coming third with her professional partner Ian Waite.
Strictly Come Dancing returns to BBC One for its tenth series on September

I like Johnny Ball, don't like his daughter though. I wonder who else we are getting?
Strictly Come Dancing 2012 hits the telly next month, and rumours about the celebrity line up are flying around!
Hereβs all the latest rumours surrounding the Strictly Come Dancing line up, set to be announced in the coming weeks.
Sid Owen
Eastenders star Sid Owen is being lined up for the new series of Strictly Come Dancing, it has been claimed.
The Sun reports that the London actor β who plays mechanic Ricky Butcher in the BBC One soap β is set to take to the dance floor this autumn.
And heβs not the only Eastenders star set to appear on Strictly, with actress Charlie Brooks being previously tipped to join the line up earlier this year.
Chris Evans
After the success of Matt Baker and Alex Jones, itβs no surprise to hear that BBC bosses want The One Showβs other presenter Chris Evans.
Comic Chris is said to be on a βhitlistβ of names that Beeb chiefs want for the new series of the show.
βChris would be a brilliant signing,β a source told The Sun recently. βHe is a TV legend and would bring his own brand of humour and charisma to the show, not to mention nine million Radio 2 fans and five million One Show fans.β
Beth Tweddle
Olympic star Beth Tweddle is one of a number of London 2012 successes who has been tipped to appear in the new series.
The Team GB gymnast won her first Olympic medal in the games earlier in the summer, and TV bosses have jumped on the chance to get her on the next run of Strictly.
βThe bosses have made it clear their priority is to secure as many London 2012 competitors as possible,β a source told The Sun. βThe Games are by far the biggest event of the year and they want to reflect that by getting some big sporting names on board.β
Jerry Hall
Supermodel Jerry Hall is another name set to appear in Strictly Come Dancing 2012 this year.
Itβs hoped that the 54-year-old, famous for dating rocker Mick Jagger, will add βglamourβ to this yearβs list of celebrities.
A source told the Daily Star newspaper earlier last week: βEveryone will want to know if, like the song, she moves like Jagger.β
Sian Williams
Former BBC Breakfast presenter Sian Williams is set to return to the channel for Strictly this year. Sian previously danced in a charity special of Strictly with Vincent in November.
Amy Williams
Bob skeleton rider Amy, who won gold in the winter Olympics back in 2010, is also set to take to the dance floor this autumn.
Sheβs sure to be fit enough for the challenge!
Michael Vaughan
Former England cricketer Michael Vaughan has also reportedly signed up for Strictly Come Dancing 2012.
According to The Sun, Michael has agreed a deal to join the showβs celebrity line up for the new series in September.
But he only signed after reassurance from pals, including footie star Robbie Savage who took part last year.
Ashleigh & Pudsey?
Britainβs Got Talent winner Ashleigh Butler could be set to appear on Strictly Come Dancing 2012.
The 17-year-old is set to split from her dancing dog Pudsey for the show, which returns to BBC One in September.
βIβd love to do Strictly. It would be nice to show people who I am,β the school girl told the Daily Star.
Noel Gallagher?
Rocker Noel Gallagher has turned down Strictly Come Dancing 2012, although bookies reckon he still might sign up!
The Oasis singer claimed he would have taken part in the BBC One series if it wasnβt for his busy schedule.
He said: βIβm flattered. Iβd have done it anβ allβ¦ Sadly though, Iβm a bit busy. Maybe next timeβ¦β
But bookies make the rocker 5/1 that he will sign up!
Davina McCall?
Former Big Brother telly host Davina McCall has said sheβd love to sign up for Strictly Come Dancing 2012.
Davina, who now hosts Got To Dance on Sky 1 and ITVβs hit Long Lost Families, admitted she wants to take part in the BBC One dancing series
βI love the idea of the dresses, the dancing, the romance,β Davina told The Sun today.

Strictly Come Dancing bosses have reportedly decided not to film in Blackpool Tower this year.
The BBC show usually holds a special event towards the end of itβs series, which is staged in the grand old ballroom. The stunning room is 120 ft x 120 ft and is made up of 30,602 blocks of mahogany, oak and walnut. Above the stage is the inscription, βBid me discourse, I will enchant thine earβ from the poem Venus and Adonis by William Shakespeare and each crystal chandelier can be lowered to the floor to be cleaned which takes over a week.
However The Sun reports that producers have made the decision to skip using the stunning location this year and will instead keep filming in the Beeb studios, in a bid to control costs.
It seems that the BBCβs Strictly Come Dancing bosses and ITVβs X Factor chiefs have been having a little game of We Landed A Big Name Celeb & You Didnβt! which has seen Strictly coming out victorious in a battle in which Celine Dion was up for grabs.
Not literally obviously β she wasnβt dangled from one of those arcade hooks that teasingly promise to drop a prize if you manoeuvre the lever properly β but she has signed up to sing on Strictly after The X Factor bosses wanted her to sing live, but Strictly were happy with a pre-recorded performance.
A TV insider told the Daily Mirror that Celine will βbelt out some classic hits on the ballroom show in the lead-up to Christmas.β
The source added, βItβs been insane! X Factor wanted contestants to fly out to Las Vegas and sing liveβ¦ Read more & comment Β»
The results show is also set to see a revamp, with the dance off being bought back. It will see the judges decide which of the bottom two placed celebrities will stay in the competition after the viewers have had their say.
But while the dance off is back, the show WONβT be going to Blackpool this year.
Tracy Beaker star Dani Harmer has become the first celebrity confirmed for Strictly Come Dancing 2012.
The news comes as itβs revealed that musical Disco Inferno, which Dani was set to star in, has been cancelled.
Itβs been claimed that investors behind the stage show withdrew after Dani quit to take part in Strictly.
A BBC spokesman for the BBC commented: βWeβre delighted Dani is on board for Strictly and, when booked, was 100% available.β
Dani is the first celebrity to be confirmed for this yearβs Strictly, which starts on September 15.
Writing on her Twitter account, the 23-year-old said: βI would just like to send a massive apology to everyone that has booked tickets to see Disco Inferno! Unfortunately the tour has been cancelled!
βOn behalf of all the cast thank you to all your amazing tweets from you guys who have seen and enjoyed it! Weβre all gutted.β
She later added: βLooking forward to my next adventure. Canβt wait to tell you all what Iβm doing next! So excited.β
A spokesman for Dani told the BBC News Website: βWe share the disappointment of Daniβs fans that the Disco Inferno tour was regrettably cancelled.
βBut weβre delighted that the BBC have offered Dani this exciting opportunity, which she is now able to confirm.β
Earlier this year Dani made the final of BBC Oneβs Letβs Dance for Sport Relief alongside Outnumberedβs Tyger Drew-Honey.

Blonde beauty Denise Van Outen has become the latest name linked to the Strictly Come Dancing 2012 line up.
The former West End singer will join the likes of Kimberley Walsh on the show when it launches next Saturday night on BBC One.
βDenise has loads of rhythm and sheβs superfit so she should be a great contestant,β a source told The Sun this morning. βSheβs never done ballroom before but sheβs certainly got the raw materials to wow on the dance floor.β
Itβs a return for Denise to BBC One, but this time sheβll be the one being judged.
The performer was previously a panelist alongside Lord Webber on his reality talent shows Any Dream Will Do and How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?
The source told the tabloid this morning: βHaving been on the other side of the table, Denise will really want to impress the judges.β
Other stars rumoured to be on the line up include Olympian Victoria Pendleton and telly presenter Fern Britton.
Bosses have begun to confirm some of the names, with Dani Harmer and Nicky Byrne amongst those confirmed on the Strictly Come Dancing 2012 line up so far.
The Strictly Come Dancing launch show will air next Saturday from 6:30PM, where the celebrities will find out which dancers theyβve been partnered with.
Theyβll then have three weeks worth of training before the first live shows kick off on October 5.
Richard Arnold
Daybreakβs Showbiz correspondent has confirmed reports that heβll be taking to the Strictly Come Dancing dancefloor this year.
Said to be an βeleventh hourβ choice for the line up to add fun to the show, Richard joked: βI had to do it β Brucie called!β
Nicky Byrne
Westlife star Nicky Byrne is set to take to the Strictly dancefloor this autumn after becoming the latest star of the line up to be confirmed.
Nicky, who has performed on the show before, revealed: βWhen Westlife were on Strictly, I remember looking at the contestants and seeing the fear in their eyes.β

The BBC Strictly site has released clues about other contestants, which hint heavily at Riley and Owen's involvement.
One clue reads "This guy is onto a good thing going", referencing EastEnders actor Owen's reggae pop hit 'Good Thing Going', which reached No.14 in 2000.
Another clue says "Now she's in the Strictly frame. Can this lady stand out from the pack?", alluding to Riley's work on You've Been Framed and Emmerdale.
Say this every year, they could send out a team of chimps learning to Samba; Cha Cha; Tango; and Foxtrot. I'll watch it, be excited and have my Autumn/Winter Saturday viewing sorted.
Glad to see Barcy Dussell as a judge.
James Bond actor Colin Salmon is the latest signing for Strictly Come Dancing.
Salmon, who appeared in Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough and Die Another Day, is one of the final names to be lined up for the ballroom dance show.
The Hollywood actor, who was once voted in People magazine's 50 Most Beautiful People in the World list, has also appeared as One in the Resident Evil film franchise.
His TV credits include Spooks, Strike Back and Law & Order UK.
Salmon will join a lineup featuring Girls Aloud star Kimberley Walsh, Westlife's Nicky Byrne, TV presenter Richard Arnold and CBBC star Dani Harmer.
I like very much
I never ever watch SCD, but due to Richard Arnold being in it, I might just this time.
And now I've just seen that Colin Salmon is going to be on it, it gives me a double incentive. 'Bring it on with the tight trousers'
