I got bombarded with emails this morning supposedly from the TV license people telling me that my direct debit had not gone through and to click a link to set up a new one ! Sadly for the scammers I knew it was a scam cos a) my renewal date was months ago , and b) I stopped paying my licence that way a few years ago!Needless to say I didn’t click anything , and simply deleted the emails !

I have had those tv scam emails before but on my hotmail email account which I don't use that much and not for the tv licence
Did get a recorded phone call about my bank account having been used for an Amazon payment and another bank transfer. An obvious scam. Caller used an 0378 phone number. As that's not in use a clear indication that a scam.

There was a cautionary tale about scammers on You and Yours (12-12.30 on Radio4 ) today .

I've seen a couple of the episodes from a show on tv where people have given money to others claiming to be what they're not, all in the name of love. It's usually lonely vulnerable people sadly.

I’ve been watching that too Slim….it’s astounding how the scammers draw people in !
On the one I heard about on the radio today the couple initially lost hundreds of thousands on £s .. …..luckily the banks have finally reimbursed them , but even so .

You’d think so Slim !
I keep getting phone calls from the same number saying they are Virgin media.
It sounded like a scam to me.
They kept on asking me “are you the account holder?”
I kept on asking them “why do you want to know?
Then they asked “are you authorised to make payments over the phone?”
I kept on asking them “why do you want to know?’
In the end I said politely “goodbye” and put the phone down.
Still keep getting calls from the same number.
Having looked online, it’s a scam.
I would never authorise any monetary payments over the phone.

I just had a phone call from that number again so decided to answer, just for a laugh.
They told me they was Virgin media. After all the “are you the account holder” rubbish. They said they was calling about an upgrade. I got halfway through telling them if I wanted an upgrade I would call Virgin and ask for one. The phone went dead

Way to go Moonie The way I look at it is that all the time I spend wasting their time means they aren’t targeting some other poor sucker .

That is just what I think too. Next time they ring again, if they do, they will get my same response until they or I get fed up

I had this call and checked their number as they called me three times (twice said I was busy) - it was a legitimate number. I also said I didn't want an upgrade I wanted a price reduction, "We're upgrades only" - asked them to put on file if I didn't have a price reduction soon I was coming out of Virgin - rubbish company

Claims to be British Gas offering new Smart Meter - however I googled it and found a Talk Talk advice page comment,
"NOT BRITISH GAS (Scam call) I ignored the call the first time they rang as I wasn't sure who the caller was. I then checked here and saw the confusion as to whether or not it's a scam number, so tweeted British Gas to ask if it actually is them or not. They have responded to say that actually it's not one of their numbers so not to answer."

Thanks for the heads up Renton
This week I've had recorded scam calls from my "bank security department" saying that there had been a £300 card payment to Amazon and an international money transfer of £1,100 card payment. Today I've had a live scam caller about my internet connection.
Although these scams aren't new, I noticed that the phone number displayed appears to be a local one (no dialling code). So it looks as if scammers are trying to con people to answer their phone as it appears to be local rather than from elsewhere in the country which people might be less likely to take the call.

Thanks for the heads up El .
If you say ….Oh dear which bank are you….you can hold them on the line for ages as they try to find out, then when you get bored ….no thanks **** off😁
Re the old Virgin one…..not a scam, the upgrade was the new all singing and dancing new box….they were offering it for free for a month or so….I asked for the offer in writing before I decided….got the letter, decided it was worth having and got it in about 3 days

And I got my new upgrade too - new router, reduced bill .... and rubbish ever since.
They've deliberately dropped my download speed and they know it. Been too busy to go through the motion to complain and get it sped up
Too risky

Had a few probs trying to work out how it worked….but that was me being a bit of a tech numpty…..not had any probs with BB speed, but our cable isn’t Open Reach, that might have something to do with it❤️
Had one of those live "Amazon" callers saying that someone had tried to order a phone on my account and had tried to change my account details and that they had sent me an email (which of course I never got). No, not in my spam folder, not surprisingly. When I asked what email address they were using, they just said the one on my Amazon account.
Then they said to look next to the 4 black squares at the bottom left of the screen, and in the search box just to the right type in EVE
which of course would take me to the event viewer, one of the standard things computer scammers try to get you to do when they ring claiming your internet connection is slow or something else.
So we now know that "Amazon" scam callers = "Windows technical support" scam callers.
