Nearly five years ago we had to say goodbye to our gorgeous cat. Someone on this forum posted this and I still remember it so thats how much it's stuck with me.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together...

It hit me coming home tonight. i think coming home will never be the same, but she was loved and spoilt and is now running around rainbow bridge with 4 working legs. chasing stones in the river, where we are going to scatter her ashes

I've been thinking about you today too. Hug I had a fair old sob last night thinking about my old black lab Murphy. You're situation yesterday was almost identical to what happened with him. I miss him still but if he hadn't left us, we wouldn't have rescued our Daphne and had all of the nine surprise pups that came with her, including my little Wilfy. I now have three dogs in the house who I love very much. Hug I know what you mean about home not feeling like home because there's such a big part of that missing for you right now. It's perhaps too early yet to be thinking about giving another dog a wonderful home with you, but perhaps it's something you'll come to in the future. I often smile thinking about what Murphy would have made of the new additions to the household. I like to think he'd be happy that we can give someone else as much of a happy life as he had with us. Maybe Chloe will meet Murphy under the Rainbow Bridge too, they'll be getting on like a house on fire and having a wonderful old time I'm sure. Hug

The Rainbow Bridge

I have just watched it and i have sobbed and sobbed... my mum lost her cat 18 weeks ago I know she would love this but I think it would make her cry too.. ty for the link El.. Smiler

I tried to watch it, but I had to come out of it... I think I may have some unresolved grieving issues over our pup (I still can't look at the last reel of photos of him). Prob cos I had to deal with my parents greif also, or maybe just cos I am too soft where the dogs are concerned.

I love the idea of the Rainbow Bridge... but I don't think I'm ready yet. Though I do 'talk' to the three dogs I've lost... when I walk my current dog, there's a place when we turn a corner and the view is breath taking, and I always say a little hello to them all.

(sounds really daft now I've typed it!)

Over the last few years our elderly cats have all died. The superb Freebie (15), my wonderful crabby bint Gizzy (19), my gorgeous, stupid wonderful Bart (20) and the delightful, amazing, fantastic three legged Poppy (22).

Each time we have grieved and cried and I'm crying now even typing their names.

But I'd not swap a day for all the joy and love and comfort they gave us and I treasure the time the childern and I had with them. They were "elderly" when my two were born and it taught them how to show love and respect for our fantastic beasts.

These days we have two young cats. My children chose them as kittens and when the time comes they will be devastated to lose them. But that doesn't stop them doting on them.

I believe that this human ability to love so passionately is all down to death. We know our time with each other is limited and that's what makes it so precious.

Now everyone who is NOT a pet lover will think I'm talking complete bollocks but the rest of you know what I mean. Big Grin

Take care sweets. xxx

My neighbour brought this in for us,

If It Should Be

if it should be that i grow weak
and pain should keep me from my sleep
then you must do what must be done
for this last battle can't be won

you will be sad - i understand
don't let your grief then stay your hand
for this day more than all the rest
your love for me must stand the test

we're had so many happy years
what is to come can hold no fears
you'd not want me to suffer so
the time has come, please let me go

Take me where my needs they'll tend
and please stay with me until the end
Hold me firm and speak to me
until my eyes no longer see

I know in time that you will see
The kindnes that you do for me
Although my tail, its last has waved
from pain and suffering i've been saved

Please do not grieve it must be you
who has this painful thing to do
We've been so close we two these years
don't let your heart hold back the tears

I had to do this at the beginning of March with my lovely Bonnie
she had been going down hill for 3 weeks and on the morning she died she collapsed at 4am in the morning and couldn't walk or reach her tray
I knew the time was right because she didn't want us, she wanted to be alone, her eyes were dead and she was not at all responsive. Her twin sister, who she had fought with for 17.5 years, looked at her and then lay down and put her head on her bottom Crying

We knew it was the end and the decision although painful wasn't in doubt
I think by the time we took her to the VET early morning it was almost over anyway and she didn't seem aware at all

I still cry talking about it but I wouldn't have wanted to put her through any more distress

Oh, Yogi, I'm SO sorry! I'm reliving my own loss of almost 6 years ago...

When my Mocha was diagnosed with cancer, we knew we only had a matter of months left. We did the best we could for her, but about 6 months after the diagnosis, when my husband was away on a business trip, she reached the point where she could barely walk, and she just looked so miserable. I had been worried that I wouldn't know the right time: either I'd have her put down too early, or I'd hang on too long. There was no doubt that morning, none at all. And, I've never second-guessed that decision. A very dear friend came over to take us to the vet, and I had the chance to say goodbye to her.

We scattered some of her ashes at the ocean (her favorite place), and buried the rest in the garden, under a dogwood tree that we planted in her memory. Every time I see the tree out my back window, I think of her.

Yogi, it will be hard for awhile--for a long time, I would hear Mocha's collar in the hall.
But, it DOES get easier, finally.

You're in my thoughts...

I was trying to second guess during the day, my dog has a history of "faking" it when she couldn't be bothered (she was a spoilt princess) but when i got home and looked in her eyes i knew it was time. We're going to take her home tomorrow where she belongs. She will be in the garden and we are tring to find the perfect plant for her, we are thinking a yellow azalea which flowers at this time of the year. I am also trying to find a goldie ornament for the garden too, but nothing is right that i have seen so far.

You can get all sorts of Pet Memorial stones - engraved with the name etc on the internet. (Just Google "Pet Memorials".)
And most stone masons who do proper gravestones will do little ones for pets.
I had one done for my darling cat, Bobo.
