Was she ill,or just sudden?
Bloody hell - that is a shock!
She seemed so healthy and young looking..
Very sad news and a shock didn't even know she was ill. The BBC should dedicate saturdays episode of doctor who to her and Nicholas Courtney. Both gone in the space of two month.
May they both rest in peace
awwww, now that is sad
Then you are a lucky man Joe - coz she was a fine looking lady
OMG
My girls absolutely love her and watch her programme on cbbc, they have just mentioned Her and Dr who today.. and got the Dr Who Easter egg today, they were so happy.
Elizabeth Sladen was busy still doing her 4th series
Tribute from Steven Moffat and one from Russall T Davies (in the first link) to Elisibeth sladen
Steven Moffat, Doctor Who's Lead Writer and Executive Producer said: "'Never meet your heroes, wise people say. They weren't thinking of Lis Sladen.
Sarah Jane Smith was everybody's hero when I was younger, and as brave and funny and brilliant as people only ever are in stories. But many years later, when I met the real Sarah Jane - Lis Sladen herself - she was exactly as any child ever have wanted her to be. Kind and gentle and clever; and a ferociously talented actress, of course, but in that perfectly English unassuming way.
There are a blessed few who can carry a whole television show on their talent and charisma - but I can't think of one other who's done it quite so politely. I once showed my son Joshua an old episode of Doctor Who, in which Lis appeared. "But that's Sarah Jane," he said, confused "In old Doctor Who. From years ago. How come she always look exactly the same?" It's not a comfort today, of course, but children will still be saying that fifty years from now."
RTD's tribute at the below link both Moffat and Russell's tributes are very touching

soooooo sad, I loved her as an actress, she was the companion for 3 doctors. John Pertwee, Tom Baker (legend) & David Tennant. She was fantastic & its terrible news that cancer claimed her life.. terrible
She was one of the first assistants I remember from my childhood. My Doctor was Jon Pertwee. Each generation as it's own Doctor.
That's sad. And she was only 63.
R.I.P Elizabeth.
Oh I hadn't heard that until this thread. She was a favourite of mine too.
How very sad. both my grandsons love sara Jane - in fact we have been watching on catch up this morning.
Like others on here I'm shocked - she looked perfectly healthy and good for her years.
i liked dr who back then when it was jon pertwqee and sarah jane, don't like many since but i did watch sarah jane smith adventures
my nine year old woke me up saying the lady from sarah jane had fainted, came downstairs where cbbc was on and what they had said was that she had passed away, he thought that meant the same as passed out, bless him hes quite a sensitive little bloke and when i explained he looked quite choked, its a difficult subject for kids death isnt it, you want them to understand but at the same time not frighten them,
She was a really lovely lady very very sad
Exclusive: 'Doctor Who' planning Elisabeth Sladen tribute
The actress, loved for her portrayal of investigative journalist Sarah Jane Smith, passed away yesterday morning after battling cancer.
Asked if a tribute to Sladen will be featured on the upcoming episode, a spokesperson for Doctor Who stated that the show's production team are "planning something suitable".
However, further information on what that might include is not yet available.
Matt Smith will kick off his second series as The Doctor in 'The Impossible Astronaut', which premieres in both the UK and US this weekend.
Paying tribute to Sladen earlier today, Smith said that he had been "welcomed", "educated" and "delighted" by the 63-year-old.

awww-thats sad and sweet
I think I'm the only person on the internet who doesn't know who this lady was. I didn't really watch Dr.Who that much and never saw the Sarah Jane thingies, maybe that was it?
Still, a young age to go though :s

She joined the show as the companion in 1973 and has been a favorite with fans ever since initially she was with the show for 3 years but has been back on several occasions and has appeared alongside 7 of the 11 doctors.
Since doctor who came back in 2005. I believe she has been in three stories on the main show and of course had her own spin off show the Sarah Jane adventures. This put her in the somewhat unique position of having both old fans that watched her growing up and new child fans.
She was a fantastic actress and really made her character something special although I never had the pleasure of meeting her, seeing her as herself out of character it is clear she was a lovely woman. I grew up watching her and she was always a favorite.
To be honest I have never felt a celebrity death like i have hers. I cannot imagine how those close to her feel. But one thing is for sure she will never be forgotten.
Nice post, Neil I've seen loads of people really upset about it so she must have made an impression.
I was so sad to hear this news ... I hd no idea she was ill.
Like most of you here I remember watching her in Dr Who when I was a wee girl - I just loved her back then.
She just seemed like a lovely, classy lady.
