I'm all for it, we had 2 gay friends who'd been together for 40 years, 2 years ago on St Valentines day they had a civil ceremony, unfortunately the oldest guy died this year in February, but at least the government couldn’t grab tax.

I don't see why if two people are together they should not make that extra commitment, what harm is there in it

There's a Christian fundie who writes to the Letters Page in my local paper who's dead against civil partnerships (that is, gay civil partnerships) but she's been complaining for years that gay people are inherently promiscuous and spreaders of HIV and therefore gay sex itself should be illegal again.

I never really got those positions: that gay people are inherently promiscuous and that gay marriage should not be allowed. It seems to me that promiscuity tends to stop when people are in long term relationships and marriage encourages long term relationships. I would have thought she'd be all in favour of gay marriage for practical reasons even if she's against gay sex on principle. Very conflicted, I'd say.

It has changed my somewhat bigoted attitude towards the US. In the past I saw it as a civilised east and western seaboard, and a lot of square bits with rednecks inbetween. It appears that California has let us down.

I think alcohol is far more responsible for people being promiscuous than the fact someone is gay.

I am going to a civil ceremony in August too, one of the girls from work. She is not a girley girl at all and its taken us all our time to get her to agree to a hen night of sorts, no veils/l plates allowed, big mis We have got one or two hen night tricks up our sleave that should be more her style.

Can't wait though, its going to be a fab day. That said her partners parents won't be there, they get around facts by thinking that they are flat mates and the wedding just reminds them that this isn't the case. Sad, but hopefully her family and friends will make it a good day for both of them.

It would have been very strange ... but then, civil weddings are all the 'rage' I say that loosely, because the fact is more and more people are feeling confident about undertaking a civil wedding, given that they do have a lot of support these days, which in my view, is pretty cool
