Joanna Lumley. Who the heck does she think she is?

Awww. She's on a roll! Well, she thinks she is anyway. Laugh

I agree, it takes a strong minded woman to kick the politicians up the arse and she's done it and I'm pleased. My grandfather fought with the gurkas in the war and if he was alive today he would be very proud.

Shall we just put forward some nice spoken actors to decide Britain's fate?

Umm, I don't think that's a good idea in every case, but in this one she has done a lot better than anyone else has previously. Personally, if it gets the subject onto the political agenda then what's the problem?

The subject was on the political agenda long before she decided to jump on the bandwagon and the comments she came out with yesterday have yet to be confirmed. I object to an elected Government being held to ransom in this way, although I agree with the cause of the Ghurkas, just not quite like that.

I meant that she has raised the awareness of the case and therefore pushed it further up the agenda. Anyway, I'm just pleased for the brave men who fought for our country. Smiler

Well then not take up my idea of employing some celebrity doing the politician's job? Smiler

Maybe the Gurkhas asked her. She has some links to that part of the world related to when her father visited neighbouring Bhutan.

Her father served with them for 30 years.

Really? Well, there you go. No wonder she's interested. I was just going on that rather lovely documentary from a year or two ago where she retraced his steps through Bhutan.

I haven't really followed the story that closely but I'm surprised so many want to come over here. Nepal is lovely, albeit poor, and the Gurkhas, even on their local pension rates, are quite well off over there. There are lush green areas a little way from Kathmandu where all the farms are owned by Gurkhas who bought them after retiring. To much local envy.

Proportionately not that many want to come over and I understand it's the principle of it all, but I object to a layperson holding the Government to ransom.

Tbh, I'm not following it too closely either but I do know it's not just about their right to live in the UK, but about receiving a full army pension aswell - something I feel they have a right too.

And I guess, the grass always seems greener on the other side! Smiler
