Yes I know what you mean Garage Joe. They didn't overdo it.

Apparently in the book [supposedly memoirs] the ship sailed off straight after the birth. The daughter didn't get more support like in the programme

I've not watched it as the title mentions Ripper which I assumed was about Jack the Ripper. I don't like watching anything to do with him, or those times. Maybe there were people who had a pretty good life back then if they had money but there was also a lot of disease, poverty and hunger. Some have mentioned whodunnit's. I like mysteries, my favourite being Agatha Christie ones, I read all her book years ago, she always wove such a trail of intrigue as to who the murderer was that I rarely guessed correctly, which I loved because in other books or mystery tv shows I guessed before the end so no element of surprise.

Agatha Christie was a master  [or is it mistress]

I love Agatha Christie, too.

ATM, I'm watching Miss Marple on ITV3+1.

Is it just the poor class things you don't like YR?..I like Downton but I do like things that portray the poorer lower classes, I love the Architecture and such..if I could go back in time I'd go back and see all that....I loved Lillies on BBC when that was on but they stopped that after the first series....

It's hard when you've read a book and think you know the character, then the casting director gets it wrong.

Thing is yogi I would'nt know who to cast myself, its a bloomin hard one...

No, although I felt Joan Hickson got about as close as anyone

She certainly was after her last book I searched for a long time to find another author who wrote mysteries but was always disappointed, I never found one to match her

My favourite character was always Miss Marple, after reading all the books I had my own idea of how she would look, her personality etc. I never related to any of the actresses often used until Joan Hickson was chosen, she was my Miss Marple, exactly how I'd thought of her in the books. The silliest casting for me was in an old Christie film with Margaret Rutherford, absolutely nothing like how Christie depicted her.

For a long time Stonks I thought my aversion to certain eras was the long clothing for some reason. When certain shows were on that were sort of costume drama I felt compelled to switch over. After some time I thought about it and realised that didn't make sense and eventually came to the conclusion it was certain centuries that were the problem when everything seemed so depressing for the average person. I've not watched Downton...not because of the long clothes or era lol but because I watch something else at that time

If you have a problem with the period as a whole, then "Ripper Street" probably isn't for you. However I thought the concept behind the show was interesting and quite clever: rather than being about Jack the Ripper, it's really about his legacy. The series starts after the Ripper has claimed his last victim, but of course the police and public don't know that. Everyone's paranoid that he's going to return, and every time a brutal death occurs it causes a panic. Much of the police force remains stuck in a mindset that's obsessed with Jack, and therefore find it difficult to cope with all the other crimes and social ills that didn't go away while he was on his killing spree. And that's where Detective Inspector Reid (Matthew Macfadyen) comes in...

TBH, I don't think it's flawless: I haven't been impressed by some of the sub-plots, and it still manages to slip into clichΓ© every now and then, Still, the period detail's interesting (among other things, it shows how the notion of London as a cosmopolitan melting-pot's is nothing new). I'm certainly going to be seeing out the series...

I'm not sure which victim you're referring to.

Ripper Street is set in 1889 - the year after Mary Kelly's death.

I just remember them on the river with a body talking about JtR..I did'nt realise it was 1889....
