WOW !!!!!

Great minds Roger. I was just thinking of him whilst having my coffee and staring out at the other customers. I was about to trawl ggjj for the thread to see if there had been an update.

Still thinking of you buddy.

Hello everyone.

Firstly, thank you for all your kind comments and concern - it's really heart-warming to know people care.

I can't remember when I last posted so forgive me if I repeat.

My Mum had her operation (double loop ileostomy) on 14th Jan and came home on 5th Feb. She was very confused and had been throughout her stay in hospital - 2months and 3 days in total.

She came home at 11am - by 6pm she was having difficulty breathing and really panicking. After an agonising 30mins wait she was rushed back in by ambulance and diagnosed with DVT which we later learned had travelled to her lung.

We were told my Mum was lucky not to have had a clot travel to her heart or brain. The doctor said, "In these life threatening conditions we begin warfarin".

After another 2 weeks in hospital my mum came home - our house has been adapted with hand rails up the stairs and a whole host of aids and adaptations. We had home care (personal care) for 4 weeks and still receive District Nurse visits to treat her leg (ulcer).

Having said this it's all the more remarkable that my Mum has made an amazing 'recovery' - she still has many support needs and I've decided not to return to work until next year to support those needs - one being to empty and replace her stoma bags which is hilariously disgusting ... but we laugh through it all.

At a recent review I commented that they chose to do the surgery when my mum was at her most ill and the surgeon said, "Well she wasn't getting any better so we decided to go for it even though it was 50/50 whether she'd pull through".

I was stunned . . . but she did survive thank God.

Since then my Dad has been diagnosed with lower bowel cancer and begins Chemo and Radiotherapy on 5th April.

Today he was hesitantly told they believe there is an 80% chance of a full recovery. Until then he has to receive therapy every week day for 6weeks before they consider surgery.

Safe to say 2016 will not be remembered as one of the best.

Hi, Saint, and welcome back!

Sounds like things are on the upswing, for both parents--glad to hear it!

My MIL had a colostomy bag for the last 5ish years of her life (we just lost her in February), and, although we had to assist at the beginning and again at the end, she was able to get to the point where she could take care of it on her own. I hope your mom gets to that point!

Definitely a rough start to your year, but maybe the worst is over, and it gets better from here.

Good that you can laugh through it though....that's what drives a lot of peeps on

Giving up and givin in......nah....it's just not something that is done.

As per your dad....80 per cent...that's way better than half   hopefully it will all work out for the best.   Best wishes
