Well I was brought up a staunch Protestant and still am to a degree.
I went to church every Sunday until recently (my daughter had started to walk and I can't bear the thought of running around the church all morning with everyone turning their nose up)
If I'm honest it's probably more my Reverend which makes me go every week. He is so funny and spot on with everything I really enjoy his sermon every week.
In day to day life I just try to be a good person but I'm sure many people do that , even if they are not religious.
Anyone in your church, even if they go every week, who turns their nose up at your child running around is not a real Christian angelicarwen, I hope you know that
I know what you are saying squiggle
But I'd feel like a muff running around in my highheels trying to drag her away from the font
I understand that. Just as long as you realise that anyone, anyone at all, who looks down their noses at you does not know the Lord.

Vanity is a sin.
I think its how Religion is percieved ...I am a Roman Catholic and go to confession saturdays and Mass Sundays,I have never thrust my religion an anyone else, all me mates in here and elsewhere know I love God, I see no harm in my beliefs and if others do not believe, thats cool ...I see people take the piss out of religion and thats cool too coz on the face of it it does not really affect me coz I dont let it...oh yes and I have been known to go to Mass on a Sunday Morning straight from an all nighter AND I never argue about religion because to me that is the same as thrusting it down someones throat....I aint no Saint and sometimes I sin (Sat nights usually ) and I can be a little at times!

I'm not a believer either. In fact I'm so cynical I believe in nowt much.
I respect anyone who can be so erm...dunno what the word is I'm searching for. "Open"? Maybe...
Fundamentalists are loons, no matter what dogma they subscribe to.

Religion causes most of the wars, both past and present. I was raised a RC but when I was about 30 years old, I found out that the richest state in the world was The Vatican. I then started to calculate how much it actually cost me to go to church every Sunday and I realised why The Vatican can claim the above title.
Having said that, I respect anyone who has faith. I don't.
Well, you've just reminded me to say that I do respect people's right to practise. I would argue to the hills to ensure that people have the right to worship but I do take exception to those trying to convert you or tell you that you'll not enter 'the kingdom' if you don't believe. Now that 'stuff' gets me going
Religion ought to be a personal matter. My parents ensured I was brought up with the principles of the Catholic Church, which is really only being taught the difference between right and wrong. At 30, I could make up my own mind and I did. I decided that it wasn't for me. I still uphold the principles, but without the churchgoing.
In the world today, if you stick a pin in the map anywhere you will be close to religious-based conflict. It separates people, not bring them together. Therein lies the problem with religion imo.
Religion is a load of old codswallop based on nothing more than fairy tales.
However, people need some sort of spiritual belief...it has a lot of psychological value, such as making the death of a loved one easier to bear, or coping with scary thoughts of one's own mortality.
so let's get rid of the big organisations and just each of us invent our own personal fantasy god/goddess .....all of the psychological benefits, none of the manipulation by clergy out to further their own political ends and greed for power and wealth

Agree with every sentence. It would have taken me ages to put together such a succinct post
It's human nature to try and find a reason for things happening. Thousands of years ago, there wasn't the understanding of the world, science, physics etc so iy gets put down to a superior being i.e God.
It's always happened in every culture, Thor the Thunder God, Ra the Sun God. It just so happened that Judiasm, Islam and Christianity sprouted arms and legs and caught on and is still going.
It fascinates me how people can believe in any relgion when you look at it rationally.

there are aspects of certain religions that wind me up no end
and i don't agree with people chapping on my door telling me god made my garden grow (actually don't think that guy was too impressed when i said no actually it's ken but i'm sure he wouldn't mind you calling him god )
but each to their own...
i believe there is something after death and in spirits and so on but many others think it is all codswallop

Reckon it comes down to everyone needing meaning to their life.
Religion is the same as falling in love - its an illness.
Religion is the same as falling in love - its an illness.
What's the point of religion?
There are two points to it.
For society, it is a form of social control, to get the people to behave as you want them to.
For individuals, it is a means of having structure and understanding in their lives.
