What do people think this is - a BB forum? Glance

Let's talk about something else:

So I'm just watching on C4 (I know, sacrilege) Revelations: Muslim School' and I can't help but think that these people are just so completely deluded! Eeker

Before you start to think I'm anti-Islamic - not at all - I think all religion sucks - sorry. I was a born and bred Catholic (Shake Head) so do have some experience of this bizarre mentality.

I can't help but feel sorry for people who cling on to a set of ideals and beliefs by which to live their lives for various reasons, which are vast I'm sure.

Not wanting to be insulting, but it's a subject I find fascinating. What's the point in religion? Surely it causes more harm than good? All I ever hear is instilled fear and self-criticism. What's the point? We're all human and make mistakes and that's what makes us human. Surely the basic law of life is to treat others with kindness and respect and that old chestnut - treat others as you would like to be treated yourself, no?

I agree with what you have said. I was brought up catholic but found the pressures too hard to bear. I agree we should treat others as we would like to be treated.

Well I was brought up a staunch Protestant and still am to a degree.

I went to church every Sunday until recently (my daughter had started to walk Ninja and I can't bear the thought of running around the church all morning with everyone turning their nose up)

If I'm honest it's probably more my Reverend which makes me go every week. He is so funny and spot on with everything I really enjoy his sermon every week.

In day to day life I just try to be a good person but I'm sure many people do that , even if they are not religious.

Religion is not the problem, the problem is some of the followers who take a small section of the good books and follow it blindly....

That is a good point ... sometimes a lot more damage can be done by so-called secular schools who preach the same arguments in reverse ... a bit like telling kids there's no such thing as Santa Claus ... Frowner

No doubt Jamie, I've come across some nasty people who claim to be religious.

What I don't understand is why people have to be conditioned to be good to others because of their religious beliefs. Shouldn't it be inherent within us as human beings? Surely 'kind' behaviour is fake if it has to be taught?

Sorry but I don't agree with you. Religion IS the problem all the way. If people were allowed to get on with their lives without being smothered we migh get along a lot better; at least that's the conclusion I've come to after all these years!!!

I think it has caused much harm over the years. As a part of the human race (just about Glance ) I think we're entitled to ask why.

Surely it's all blind faith? I don't hear any questioning of scriptures / beliefs from religious folk. It seems to me that it's just accepted without any analysis of how or why this religion is 'the truth' and there is no requirement for evidence.

Religion causes most of the wars, both past and present. I was raised a RC but when I was about 30 years old, I found out that the richest state in the world was The Vatican. I then started to calculate how much it actually cost me to go to church every Sunday and I realised why The Vatican can claim the above title.

Having said that, I respect anyone who has faith. I don't.

Well, you've just reminded me to say that I do respect people's right to practise. I would argue to the hills to ensure that people have the right to worship but I do take exception to those trying to convert you or tell you that you'll not enter 'the kingdom' if you don't believe. Now that 'stuff' gets me going Mad

And what about religions which shape the laws of a country telling people how they can live their lives? Gay people, for example?

Anyone in your church, even if they go every week, who turns their nose up at your child running around is not a real Christian angelicarwen, I hope you know that Hug

OMG we could discuss this one until the world`s end. Its a subject I`ve got quite heated about in the past. I love to listen to Richard Dawkins` lectures - have you read his book `The God Delusion`? Every page is fantastic.

Mind you, I`m not totally in agreement with him. I think each one of us is god - we are our own gods. I do believe there is more than just the physical.

Its a shame, but religion has brought more evil than any one thing.

Some psychologists would class religiousity (have i made that up?) as a mental illness.

But I realise that it gets people through - its like an opiate in a way and if it helps people get through their troubled lives and give meaning then all well and good.

None of us know - we can only surmise.
