Should Reality show contestants win Reality shows because of sob-stories?

No. They should be evicted as soon as they mention family illness. 
If they want the public to know their friends/relatives/pets medical history, save it for their eviction interview.

We know that parts of the press make it their business to investigate the backgrounds and domestic circumstances of contestants, but it seems that in this case Charlie has himself chosen to reveal it to others.

However I must admit my support of Fred was born out of pity/sympathy and I am sure I am not alone.

If that's the case ...he's not doing it to curry favour with us is he? surely you speak about your family to fellow HM's dont you?
If it's not been broadcast to the nation we can't really accuse him of going for the sympathy vote. Surely they'd be something wrong if he simply didn't mention his mother.

Last night Charlie chatted about his mum for quite some time, reminiscing abut his childhood among other things.Did something spur this?,a birthday perhaps something which saw him chat as he did.

Pete's 'dream' speech was awful.... so transparent - I am still a bit surprised it didn't lose him more support.
And in answer to your question - no, I don't think BB should be won because of a sob story. That's not to say a housemate 'with' a sob story shouldn't win... but not just because of that story!
For me, the winner should be the one who I have enjoyed watching the most, who has made me laugh etc.
So I'm not really fussed who wins this year!

Charlie was talking about his mother on the live programme last night.
Saying how lovely she was, some things she had done in her life, how he was desperate to make her proud, and how she was now getting to grips with being able to say his name again on her road to recovery.
I saw no obvious signs of Marcus being startlingly impressed.

I thought the dream would dash his chances, obviously not.... The winner should be the one who entertained the most and played a good game... Charlie has done none of those things so far...

Charlie has mentioned the fact that his mother is unwell and in a coma in a late night/early morning chat with Marcus. They talked until daylight. Marcus had been whistling and Charlie got up to talk to him and comfort him because Marcus was feeling in a low mood. It was then that Charlie mentioned his mother and the fact that she was in hospital in a coma, but that conversation took place some weeks ago now. But my feeling is that Charlie is now making sure we all heard that conversation and, just in case, he is repeating it for our benefit ya kna. 
The sympathy card is quite a good card to play on a reality show.
