Thanks EC, I didn't know there was a topic about this. When I was notified about XP it didn't mention they were withdrawing support for 8.1. they were suggesting I switch to it, good job I didn't if they're now having more problems with 8.1. I wish they'd stop meddling, updating and making changes

I've just had a brief read (need to do a more thorough one) but I think it is saying that as long as you keep ono top of the all of the service packs and security patches you will be OK with your Windows 8 operating system. It's far too new for Microsoft to drop it now.

Aww, thanks Yogi oh btw I was having a quick scan through the Pistorius thread and have similar views to you in general online there's very few who feel the same lol

I just checked the date of the link I was sent and it was posted today...I'd started to wonder if I was reading old info even though it was only about 2 weeks ago the notification I had suggested switching to 8.1. I think I saw mention of Windows 9 somewhere so maybe they're moving on to that now?

I have done a lot of research on this as I use XP on my PC and no way would I 'upgrade' to Win 8.1 even if I could afford to do that or had a PC fast enough to cope ..

Anyway main thing on XP is to not use Internet Explorer as there will be no more security patches for that and it was partly the main way they found holes anyway... Use FF or Chrome as these browser are going to support any XP holes for the foreseeable future as is AVG anti Virus..

If you can afford to upgrade and want to I'd go with Win 7... for now I am just checking that all my malware and antivirus programs will continue to support XP operating system PCs in any updates they do and security patches and most are doing so..

Also do a google search for any programmes you use regularly which get updated to check if they will continue to support XP operating systems in security updates.. if they won't then you'll have to try and find a different software that does the same job and still supports XP if you want to ensure you are secure as you can be with any Operating system not just Win XP...

Thanks for the link Erin. I'm a bit challenged when it comes to absorbing a lot of tech talk lol but something jumped out at me which is helpful. I'll keep the link to re-read to see what else I can make sense of

Hi Olly, I have IE but don't use it, thankfully I use Firefox so it's good to know they're going to support XP. Apart from having Zone Alarm and AVG I'll check online later to see what other programmes support XP

I'm with her.  I've surrounded my laptop with whatever I can think of to repel nasties and so far, knock wood, I've had no problems. All my little updates do their job. Who needs MS.

Microoft has issued a security update to fix the Internet Explorer bug that erinp posted about.

This update has also been released for Windows XP as Microsoft say that the bug was discovered only a few days after they withdrew support.

I was going to look for this thread and then forgot cos I got an Win XP update this morning for IE and thought to myself eh is this legit as we weren't supposed to be getting anymore. . then realised it must relate to  the huge security hole they found, yet again... and also because of the numbers of people that haven't upgraded, either thru preference or lack of funds, Microsoft would be seen as holding people to ransom to buy their upgrades if they hadn't fixed such a huge security hole for all Win OS 's users..

Not that I use IE anyway..
