Have you ever wanted to see a film but have been unable to find it?

I have been wanting to see Carl Dreyer's The Passion of Joan of Arc for many years. This is probably the most important film never to have been released on video or DVD in this country. Some years ago Film 4 showed it as a one off but that was in the days before it moved to Freeview.

I managed to track down the company which holds the rights to distribution in the UK. The film is a silent film and they were not going to release it until they found an appropriate sound track. A pity, considering that the director went on record saying that there should be no music.

Anyway, after many years someone informed me that it was possible to buy a Korean distributed version with English subtitles and region-free. So I have ordered it and hopefully in about a month it will arrive. Let's hope the wait has been worth it!

Try http://www.vsom.com/productdet...earch&ProductID=1629

I assume this is likely to be a Region 1 DVD though so you would need to make enquiries.

Hugo, The Hippo (Hugó, a víziló) A 1973 Hungarian kids cartoon film. They used to show this film in its edited, dubbed american version on tv at christmas and so I have fond childhood memories of it but unfortunately it has only been given a DVD release in Hungary.

According to Wikipedia, it's never been released on DVD outside Hungary because of its "psychadelic, weird, politically incorrect and violent content".

Guess what, there's a site for fans of Hugo the Hippo at http://www.hugothehippo.com/ (it is a small site), but there's a little message there telling you how to get in touch with the original director who just might be able to provide a DVD.

(though it might turn out to be only available in Hungarian)

El Loro,

I was lucky enough to see a screening of The Passion of Joan of Arc in Sheffield Cathedral back in 2008. The film was accompanied by a specially written score by the Sheffield band In The Nursery (I recommend checking out all of their soundtracks). I have included a link below for you to view more information.

It was a great experience watching the film in a cathedral whilst listening to a live soundtrack being played.

Nagyon köszönöm, El Loro (I think that's Hungarian for Thank you very much) I'm glad to see that there are other Hugo fans out there but I'd rather watch a subtitled or dubbed version because my Hungarian is a little rusty.
