Have you ever wanted to see a film but have been unable to find it?
I have been wanting to see Carl Dreyer's The Passion of Joan of Arc for many years. This is probably the most important film never to have been released on video or DVD in this country. Some years ago Film 4 showed it as a one off but that was in the days before it moved to Freeview.
I managed to track down the company which holds the rights to distribution in the UK. The film is a silent film and they were not going to release it until they found an appropriate sound track. A pity, considering that the director went on record saying that there should be no music.
Anyway, after many years someone informed me that it was possible to buy a Korean distributed version with English subtitles and region-free. So I have ordered it and hopefully in about a month it will arrive. Let's hope the wait has been worth it!
