Well that has to be the biggest load of shit I've read on the forums in many a year! Not sure about that, tbh. I lived in North Hertfordshire for a while, and the superiority complex of many folk round there was unbelievable, simply because they lived a short train ride from London.

Thank you for that. I thought I was on my own ..............that has always been my experience TBH. Obviously not everyone agrees but .......surely there's a better way of expressing it?

In my experience, people "oop North" are generally friendlier and less full of bull. Although there are always exceptions. And cities like Leeds knock spots off dreary dumps like flippin Stevenage
Leeds is a fantastic City Hadn't been there for around 15 years until recently, I was very pleasantly surprised....loved it, knock spots of Manchester too IMO...even though I am quite close to manchester....

Am I being picky if I say I cannot bear listening to the way east enders speak! I find it incredibly lazy! Why,why, why do they say... wiv, barf,,sarf, larf etc! Yuck! Otherwise I am not really bothered where people are from!Generally speaking most regional accents add a richness to the English language!Mind you if you look back at some of the BW films even children spoke with a BBC accent which is quite bemusing!Hurrah for the anti-hero/kitchen sink dramas which gave us regional accents ,in the 60s I think!
Having lived darn sarf and oop north there maybe some differences in attitude! The south basically is far more cosmopolitan, therefore has a very rich diverse culture and very open to change! I also found that people in the south tended to be more wary of strangers and would avoid eye contact at all cost Best not to say hello to any stranger otherwise you risk being carted off in a straight jacket! However, oop north most people will start a conversation at the drop of a hat to all and sundry! But do not be fooled by the friendliness of northerners ,they do tend to be rather insular and generally stick more closely to immediate family so an outsider for all the friendliness that's offered on the surface stays on the surface.Northerns also tend to love committees , they love to have a meeting about a meeting that's about erecting a sign post! Nowt get's past the chairman of a northern committee! All in all both southerners and northerners have things to celebrate and things that need working on. There are snobs down south but just as many inverted snobs oop north!

Oooh, my brother used to live in a village called Wheathampstead.... possibly the most stuck up place I have ever been to!

I don't think it was a case of "southern village hates anyone more northern" though.... the impression I got was that they pretty much looked down on everyone else throughout the country!

Jaywick

JAYWICK was on there!   Oh how funny!

Its about 20 miles away from where I live.   Its THE place everyone refers to, when describing a shithole!

Its the wild west shanty town of Essex... cheapest place to live in the south east (prob cos most of the places are mobile homes)....  hubby thought the wild west description was exaggerated til he saw the photo's of the shanty town huts!

I have no idea in what context they referred to Jaywick... though I can guess... but it was unfair to use Jaywick as a comparison or example of anything.   Jaywick is unique... 15th generation unique to be precise!

It should be lovely living by the seaside, though.  How could it turn into an uncool place?

Not sure how it ended up like it... but its just down from Clacton on Sea, which is ok.... property is cheaper there than Colchester which is 15 miles inland. -  its ok.

There is a local culture of looking down on Claccy! or at least claccy birds!    But then the Chelmsford lot say the same about Colchester birds!

Frinton on Sea is  close by... thats the posh bit.... within the Frinton gates!   Expensive houses.... though I wouldn't personally want to live there.   A lot of people retire there.

Walton on the Naze is the best one in my opinion, its lovely there.  Fab beach as well.

But in terms of grim coastal towns, we have Harwich as well, and thats pretty grim.

Jaywick is just infamous....   I do actually know some very nice properties with the postal address of Jaywick, worth a fortune... but they are in the rural outskirts, so not strictly Jaywick.

I never know where we fit in in truth Midlanders aren't considered at all to Northerners we're part of the south and to southeners we're part of the north !  Personally I like being a happy medium
