DO folks think we're all dim oop North...lol.
I am Yorkshire born & bred... but live in Essex, kids born in Essex, hubby is a Londoner.

I am sick to the back teeth of the so called teasing my family give me about the North.  Its getting increasingly insulting.  To an extent where my son actually believed that there was no internet up north!

Hubby just giggles when I get the hump about it.   I have told him now on a few occasions that I am pished off with it.   Its not just aimed at me... its aimed at the north, comments such as northern monkeys, what would they know they are northerners etc.

Following on from the Anton wotsit racism thread last week I had decided to try and throw something back at him when he next got on his 'northerns are not as good as us' soapbox.   I was going to call him a chink (cos whilst it doesn't normally bother him, it would be so out of place coming out of my mouth, I was sure it may actually make him think).

I couldn't do it... I really really tried.   In the end I said "I had decided to call you a chink next time you started slated Yorkshire off".

He just roared with laughter.

At the end of the day, its his misguided arrogance, and his ignorance.   I just need to ensure that he doesn't end up brainwashing my kids with his opinions.

I think there is a divide, I'm a born in York, lived most of my life in Leeds, now in Cumbria lass. I have relatives in London and been there for a few family weddings.
My dad always slated the beer.  They laughed at flat caps.
Telly often portrays northerners as thick, and not that long ago since to be a bbc news reader or presenter you had to speak the queen's english.

Anna Ford was born a few miles away, looks like I missed my vocation Low  It really irritates me how northerners are portrayed

Well I was born in London and lived there for thirty years and i can say that undoubtdly most Londoners/Southerners feel somehow superior to those that live in the North. I have lived oop North for 22 years now ...................i wouldn't go back South if I was paid to. if this superior attitude that some have prevents them from moving North .................it's all good as far as I'm concerned. Let's keep all the good bits a secret and keep feeding them all the naff stuff

Difficult one really. There is certainly a divide between that London and the rest of the country. Prescott also proved that there were one or two poor enclaves in the South. One can't generalise about the North either. The area between Leccy and Zaphod contains some of the more hopeless, depressing, and Thatcher abused areas in the country, and yet ..... The north contains estates of richness that yer average London breadhead could only dream of.

I missed this programme last night, but it's repeated again tonight on BBC2 quite late, so I'm gonna watch it. As a lot of yoy know on here I'm a proud Esat Midlander, and very aware of the fact that there is a North South divide, plus the media love the South, especially the damn South East, I don't have much time fo Southeners, especially theirawfull accents and attitudes.

I found it a very interesting programme.
I always thought it was just a bit of banter between the North and South, but obviously there are real economic problems up North, which adds to the animosity somewhat!

Anyway, as a suvverner, I can live with being told we are all unfriendly twats, as long as it stops more norvenners coming daahn ere wiv their flat caps and ferrets!

Must say, Pauline Prescott is luvverly, despite being a kleptomaniac!

My flatmate is from Lanadan, he's OK I suppose, but then again I only see him at the weekend, I have a couple of Southern freinds, so long as I put up with the awful accent, then I don't mind them, I know I shouldn't tar everyone with the same brush, but I could never live down sarf, the accent would drive me nuts, apparently the cockney accent was voted the worst in England, and I can believe it, my cousins accents are vial!

Coronation Street... A light hearted soap with lots of humour, with the occasional serious storyline, but even those are usually full of humour.

Eastenders... A soap full of loud mouthed idiots, verbally and physically abusing each other, who then go on to sleep with each others brothers/sisters before turning into manic depressives. The average storyline usually involves misery.

Personally I think that sums up the difference nicely.

I dunno if its still the case but certainly 15/20 years ago the highest proportion of people that held shares was in the north because people there generally have more disposable income cos of lower house prices etc.
Maybe, but the wages up here are less than down South (minimum wages aside), so I guess it evens itself out in terms of the cost of living...

That's the ones with jobs, I presume!
The figures were like that in the last recession so I'm assuming they'd be pretty much the same this time around....

And does that higher wages that some people get not get swallowed up by exorbitant housing costs, congestion charges (going up to ÂĢ10 a day!) and massive fare increases.

DAA, yes, and I hope you're proud of it. Mine sadly changes according to the company I'm keeping, I'm like a flippin chameleon thingy, can't help it, don't mean to, just another part of me that is totally uncontrollable,

I am Low, couldn't care less what I sound like to be honest  As for yours well, I blame your hubby for confusing us all

Well that has to be the biggest load of shit I've read on the forums in many a year!
Not sure about that, tbh. I lived in North Hertfordshire for a while, and the superiority complex of many folk round there was unbelievable, simply because they lived a short train ride from London.
I once overheard two local girls talking about "Northerners" and people from Wales and Scotland. They were going on about how sorry they felt for them, because they were years behind in terms of technology, fashion, etc, and it was "no wonder" they were "all" either on benefits or doing crap jobs. Oh, and they were all alkies, as well.

I regularly had people ask me, in all seriousness, whether we had things like Marks and Spencer and Indian restaurants back home in Wales.

In my experience, people "oop North" are generally friendlier and less full of bull. Although there are always exceptions. And cities like Leeds knock spots off dreary dumps like flippin Stevenage!
