Just making my breakfast porridge with water to be healthy, but porridge is a bit bland. Thoughts on what would be nice with it. I'm not keen on honey so that's out. And it has to be healthy too so no ice cream!

Thanks. I'm trying to be both healthy and cost conscious, so making my own seem the best way to manage both elements. I just find putting fruit in to porridge don't work so well for me, the hot and cold contrast not to my liking. But I'm looking for something slightly sweeter to liven up the eats.
Try putting in some sultanas when cooking and flavouring with cinnamon

The sultanas is a good idea, but I will skip the cinnamon as I find it too over powering. Off to Morrisons/Tesco shortly so will pick up some sultanas.
I hate porridge but I love the Greggs one and I can skip lunch because I am not hungry ,I just have a coffee.I also eat Belvita breakfast fruit and fibre biscuits and they are delicious and I dont feel hungry until diner time at 5'ish.They are half price at the moment in Tesco .You get six packs of four biscuits for 1 .79 .
I can't eat porridge, I start to retch before I get it anywhere near my mouth. Shocking admission for a Scot.
I'm like that when it's sweet Yogi, but I like it with salt ( no milk.. ecchhhh!!! )

The good thing about porridge is that it does seem to fill you up for hours. I'm trying to avoid any processed foods and start prepping meals from scratch with raw ingredients. I'm hoping that I lose a bit of weight combined with exercise (not much weight as I am not a big fella). Also going to see if it benefits my pocket. I'm snacking on fruit and veg like carrot.
I make it with water and salt, when ready put it into a bowl ,then pour milk on it.No sweet stuff at all.My nieces partner makes it with syrup, yuk!
There's a fruit and veg delivery service in my neck of the woods, it's brilliant! Really reasonable, and I'm cooking from scratch more .

sweet porridge isn't right

My friend does it that way. I am yet to try it, but I am working up to it. The salt feels a little incongruous.
I am liking all these different techniques and styles. All good stuff to try.

Over the years, I have tried so many times to eat it, but I just can't get it into my mouth.
Sometimes I make it for my dog, she loves it. She likes it made with water, and then some milk added to help cool it.
OH - I nearly forgot. I am eating Thick Milled Oats. What is your preference?
.
I used to use pinhead oatmeal when I was a bit more disciplined about breakfast ( used to steep it overnight! ) but now it's pretty much whatever's to hand
Needs to be thick though , the texture of runny porridge gives me the heebies
ohh!! and it's quite nice with pine nuts !
Ugh I hate porridge but I am forcing myself to have some hot oat cereal in the mornings to cut back on some of the other crap I'd usually eat.
I bought some cheap blackcurrant jam (it's a bit runnier than the dearer stuff...which is what I want) and drizzle in a half a teaspoon (sometimes a full one when I'm really not in the mood for all that oaty goodness) and it doesn't taste too bad....well I can get through half a bowl without retching so it's helping

Same here - dash of pepper too.

That's how I learnt it from my Scottish MiL. My mum used to make it with chickenstock and much thinner. It used to be something to look forward to after a day's shopping with her in Cologne. I make it now and again when I feel down and it cheers me up.

What do you mean 'overpowering'? Things (generally) are only overpowering if you use 'too much' of them....and 'too much' is a relative amount as we all have differing likes and dislikes.
I like it with milk and golden syrup and, also, not porridge as such but I love this: Soak the oats in fruit juice then throw on whatever chopped dried fruits and nuts you fancy, add toasted coconut, fresh fruit and greek yogurt. Yummy

OK, OK. I find the flavour of that spice very strong EVEN in small amounts. Not a spice I would normally use.

I like the idea of soaking in fruit juice. How long do you soak for?

I used to do it overnight EC, but found 20/30 mins was fine for my taste as I don't like the oats to go 'slimy' My friend who introduced me to this used apple juice, but I've used allsorts, whatever I have in

That would work for me. I can have my morning bath while they are soaking (while we are both soaking !!!). Apple juice would be my first thought. Just need to ensure I get the right volume of liquid to oats. Going to give that a go.
