I don't buy or wear them but each to their own. One thing I disagree with is that out national Broadcaster namely BBC and UTV make their News presenter wear them whether they want to or not which I think is pretty unfair.

They work for The Establishment, so they have to 'be' Establishment.  Maybe they are considering the Irish servicemen and women too?

We all have to do things we may not like in our jobs, but it is what we are paid to do.

Hasn't Remembrance Sunday always been the nearest Sunday to the 11th?

Well, yes - that is Rememberance Sunday - but the two minute silence used to be held at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, and still is in lots of places. It has died out as time has passed - bit of an inconvenience to commerce I suppose

It got a bit silly in Sainsburys.  It was like "Minted peas, where the feck are the minted peas?  Erm ... " *bingbong* "Crap!"  *silence* [thinks of servicemen, war, terrible, brave, sacrifice, etc] *bingbong* "Right!  What was I doing?  Oh, minted peas!  They're next to the cauliflower florets!"

It's Niamh's republican indoctrination that clouds her views
No it isn't Republican views that cloud my judgement actually, why say that, this thread is going to be turned on its head. The reason I don't buy them is because I don't agree with war and I particularly don't agree with the war in Iraq so why should I pay to support it when I don't agree with it? Yes the Poppy is worn to remember those who were killed but the money goes to part help war veterans ans also it goes to help support the ongoing war. So sorry if my un-PC views don't suit you.

It would'nt bother me if they wore them 12 months a year or sticking out their arses aslong as the money goes to the ex servicemen and their families....
Totally agree with you, Stonks.

To answer your original question IP, I always buy and wear a poppy and am proud to do so. Incidentally, the British Legion does not support ongoing wars. The money they raise goes to support injured and ex-forces personnel who require help.

Doesn't that just mean they support people injured in the current wars, as well as those in WW1 & 2? Not like, supplying them with ammunition and stuff

Supporting the people, not the war.  Such as bereavement counselling, help with illness, debt assistance, even career advice when leaving the services.  The same sort of thing people might want to do for forces people who fought in 'just wars' like WW2 rather than illegal ones like Iraq.  Government decides on the politics, forces people just do the job.

It means they help the servicemen and women who are involved in the on-going wars i.e. those injured in the current conflicts. It doesn`t mean they fund the conflicts. I think you may have misunderstood.

In that case, why not wear a white poppy?

I don't support the war in Iraq either, and quite possibly many of the soldiers over there putting their arses on the line don't either, but they are there doing what is required of them as their job.  The Poppy Appeal helps the forces and their families, it doesn't fund government decisions.  I just can't forget some of the questionable stuff you've posted about British soldiers before and I'm not sure about your motives with this TBH  but OK, let's leave it there and carry on with the thread.

Yes, I buy poppies and I observe the 2 minutes silence.

My great granddad was in world War 1 and my mum says he never ever mentioned it except for Remembrance Sunday when he would go to the war memorial and lay a wreathe of poppies.

We remember all soldiers who have lost their lives in all conflicts in Remembrance Sunday including the ones in Iraq and Afghanistan and regardless of how you feel about the conflicts, it still doesn't really hurt to show a little respect for these men and women does it?

I think you should go off and research, they do not support any war, this has always been your thing.
You never make a big opening statement, you just wait to see what people will say so's you can change your arguement.
I've seen your views so many times and how they change..Did you buy them before the Iraq war?....
