It's beginning to look as if the strange pronunciation might be just a local thing ...

'Twould be interesting if another forumer from South Yorkshire could enlighten us.

i say skool....but I pronounce "cruel" as crew ill

I lived in Doncaster for 10 years and the accent does lend itself to pronounce it as scoowal. When I lived in Somerset though it sometimes sounded as though people would miss the 'l' off and pronounce it skoow.

I say skool,but I have heard it said as Skooal, I dont think it is a regional thing just a lazy way of talking as in some people will say Burninum instead of Birmingham.

There's a bit of 'skoo-al' in Cardiff too, but I don't have a Cardiff accent so it's skool for me

I say it like skool but I also say cruel like skool too.

I say 'skool'.  Not that I ever got to say it that much - was expelled.  Twice.

I too live in South Yorkshire and also find pronunciation is changing. It's a bit like the upward inflection that Australians seem to use. Also the way the word "like" is used almost as much as expletives for some people.

It's common in some parts of south Wales. My nieces have strong Llanelli accents so Mum is "Maaaaammy" with a long drawn out vowel and school somehow develops another syllabub.  

Pointless fact of the day: the word school comes from the Welsh/Old Briton ysgol (us-gol) meaning ladder. So a ladder of learning - a process if you will. And yes Welsh for school is ysgol. I only know this because I was confused by the "Emergency ladder" signs on the train into work. The Welsh version just had the word Ysgol. I couldn't see what schools had to do with getting out of a train PDQ 

my daughter comes home from boarding school (in surrey) talking like that... it drives me nuts...   we have to relentlessly take the piss out of her til she stops 

Scool for me   but a girl I work with (she's from Newcastle, I'm from just outside) thinks it's funny because I say food as fud

Oh no no no, one of my pet hates,maybe cos that was what my cookery teacher would say and I was scared of her,I also don't like" Tortoise" pronounced that way it should be Tortus.
