1) Have Conservatives taken all the Labour seats in the Country?

2) If yes, do the Labour Council Leaders lose their Jobs over night?

3) If no, what happens next?

I know what I need to know about different parties but I am not sure what happens when say,a Labour run Council loses the votes in the local elections...and what happens in Westminster?

Thanks in advance for any answers, I have taken more interest as I have got older but still not sure on some things Red Face..please come in and ask any questions if you have any, dont think peeps will think you are thick,( I AM thick around Politics tho! Laugh) we have a bunch of good people on here who know what they are talking about.. Smiler

There weren't any council election in my area, just the Euro elections.

My Council is still Labour and will continue to be so until we have local elections (and they may still hold on)...I suspect this is the case in other areas too.

I haven't looked at the figures in the last few hours and the numbers were still rolling in so I can't answer the rest of the question.

Wasn't much help was I? Laugh

1) not every one but most Big Grin at least in regions where elections were held, normaly elections to local councils are held 3 out of every 4 years with 1/3 of the council up on each occasion

2) if they are no longer in the majority on the council then yes whoevers party make up the majority (or have an agreement with another party to take control) will take over as leader, but if they kept their seat then they keep their job as a councillor. if the council becomes no overall control then the leader will be from the largest single group.

If a Labour run council lose there majority then the party with the highest maj run the council, that party will vote within their group who their leader will be, he or she will be the laeder of the said council.
Yesrerdays elections were to vote on the european parliament, not the UK parliament, however it does indicate what would be the likely conclusion if we had a snap election very soon ,that is why MP's on all sides of the house are asking Brown to stand down.

votes in councils have no effect on the makeup of the mp's other than to get them to take notice of public opinion.

votes cast in local council elections work the same way as westminster in that the person in each ward with the most votes is elected.

I don't know but I'll hazard a guess. As the elections are planned, I imagine it is like being made redundant. You expect you might end up going on the day so you clear your desk in anticipation and start saying "If I'm here after this week then ..." to everyone you have dealings with.

There is still all the council appartatus in place, like with the relationship between the government and the civil service, it's just that the policy makers change so I bet they can basically just go on the day.

because the euro elections cover larger areas and use a totally different voting system its almost impossible for them to give a representation of how things would apply at a general election beyond the raw percentages. the council elections though do give a fair indication unless there are extenuating local circumstances (like an independent anti hospital closure candidate who wins).

its also worth noting that tactical voting (where voters vote for someone to protest against another party) is massive in the euro elections and quite high in council elections compared to general elections.

normaly fewest people vote in euro elections, and most vote in general elections with council elections falling between the two..

kind of, yes boris beat red ken so ken lost his job, a lot of london assembely members too were defeated in the election and went too however in london the mayor has an administration and support, boris wasnt going to want to keep red kens men and advisors to help him so they went too, a bit like a council switches from labour to conservative, they will cut council funding to certain "pet" (read politicly correct) projects that labour were using taxpayers money to support.

i have a perfect example of this i could give but believe me when i say for the sake of this thread and your sanity its better that i dont.
