Adobe has announced that they have identified 32 critical vulnerabilities in their Flash Player affecting Windows, Linus and the Mac.

They are advising everybody to upgrade to v 10.1.53.64 for all users of v 10.1.45.2 and earlier. The vulnerabilities could cause your computer to crash or worse could potentially allow an attacker to take control over your computer.

Upgrades to Reader and Acrobat products are due to be released by the end of June. Apparently it is possible to booby-trap PDF files.

This is a link to the Flash Player installation page on the Adobe site

The Adobe security bulletin giving details is here

This was announced last Friday as per this BBC article.

If we have been hacked, would we know by now
I would think that if someone had hijacked your computer that one would know as you would find that you no longer could control it. I would guess that Adobe have kept the pronlems as quiet as possible until this upgrade was ready so not to alert the baddies - it's the people who aren't aware of this upgrade who vulnerable, though in due course the various anti-virus programs out there will be able to deal with the hacking bugs.

My concern is that I just happened to come across the Adobe announcement by chance - there must be millions of users out there who are totally unaware of this.

I updated the reader earlier, worried as it says to uninstall the older version first
There is no need to worry about uninstalling the older version first (though I thought this was done automatically as part of the updating process) as the only thing the reader does in to allow you to read PDF files - your computer wouldn't be vulnerable during the short time when there was no reader on your computer.

However, the Adobe announcement did say that the reader would need to be updated again when they release that security update later this month. So my advice is to take care when opening PDF files over the next couple of weeks. Files from trusted sources should be fine, but be careful about any PDF files attached to emails received from senders that you don't know.

do we really need another sticky tho.. ? gotta scroll down half a page to get to a thread.. the first page will be all sticky's and no discussions at this rate
I haved now asked Seattle to remove the Firefox 3.6 sticky as that thread has served its purpose. The other stickies are outside my control. I had asked for a sticky for this Flash Player thread though due to it's importance and urgency. With the BB activity at present, if I hadn't, very few people would have seen it - it had already drifted well down page 2 within 3 hours of me creating this thread.

Although Flash Player can be automatically updated, not everyone would have the automatic update setting set to on and I doubt if many people know how to. For those who want to be able to have greater control over Flash Player, here is a link to Adobe's page on their settings manager which you need to use to check and change settings. It's the Global Notifications Settings panel which is relevant here - my guess is that for most people, the automatic update will be set on, but that it is only checked every 7 days.

I hear ya El Loro  but considering the number of  Security issues endemic with most interweb type software out there and  the constant updates being issued by all sorts of software packages as they discover new holes all the time,   the first two pages could be full of Sticky's warning about new discoveries on a regular basis

I am not dissing the Notification but more the Stickying of them all ..

maybe I am not expressing it well but hope you get tis not personal just the place is looking a mess with so many sticky's and a thread that is important can be bumped for a good while so all people see it ...

anyway hope that makes sense
Mount Olympus *Olly*
Mount Olympus, I knew that your post wasn't meant to be personal and I never took offence - you made a valid point and if every time some security breach occurred and I or someone posted a sticky, this forum would get swamped with stickys.

You make a valid point in that bumping a thread would tend to keep it in view, but because of all the BB activity at present, I would need to be bumping every hour . Also the only way in which a topic can be shown in every forum here, without duplcating the thread in each forum, is to get a shortcut sticky.

There is a safeguard against that as we can't create a sticky ourselves - we have to ask Seattle to do this for us, and I think they would only give a sticky where they accepted that there was a valid reason.

Help El Loro. I did the Update last night and everything is slow since I did it. It took ages to load this and it's the same with the games on FB.
This is not something I have come across. However I did a quick Google search and found this link to a site with an article headed Flash Player slows down computer.

In turn it provides a link to download PC Health Advisor. Please note that although I have heard of this before I have no actual knowledge of it so cannot tell you how to use it.

This is a direct link to the PC Health Advisor site where you will be able to find more information about it.

I do not know how long the advisor will take to look through your computer and do the necessary adjustments, but I would allow plenty of time and don't have other programs running at the same time, including your browser, because that would probably scupper the process.

Good luck.

I have Windows XP, but use Chrome as my browser. Is it best to upgrade anyway?
It's not a stupid question at all.

Chrome is a bit different to other browsers - I have found this link to detailed instructions as to how to install Flash Player on Chrome browsers.Print it out and hopefully you'll be updated.

Thanks El Loro. I'll have a look but like PB I'm not very techy either. I was thinking of uninstalling it and putting the previous one back up but I'm not sure. I also tried Restore to before I did the update but it's not showing up. PB I'm using Chrome as well but with Windows 7.
I have seen reference via a Google search that for Chrome users, Flash Player can run slowly if the Player storage settings are set at the default 100 KB. I have seen a suggestion that this should be increased to Unlimited.

This is a direct link to the Storage settings panel via the Player website. So try increasing the setting by moving the pointer to the right of the bar. Of course, not having Chrome I can't try this out myself. So it may be that this will sort out the problem without the need to use the PC Health Advisor.

My pc was also running very slow after the update and all the other microsfot updates I had been having a problem with so I went to Disk clean up and then when prompted I removed "downloaded programme files" (forgot to do system restore but I would advise that) anyway there were quite a few and pc has been running faster ever since (though BB in the background slows everything down) they are files like activex etc which download anyway everytime you need them hope you can understand ok I'm not techy at all and am always baffled

I've just turned on my PC, and once at the desktop had a notice from Adobe that there was another upgrade for Flash Player. I was a bit surprised but downloaded and installed it anyway. Then I looked to see which version I had downloaded and it's exactly the same version 10.1.53.64 as the one above, so that was a waste of time!
El Loro
If you want to check which version of Flash Player you have, this is one way.

Look via Windows Explorer (the one where you can see the files on your hard drive, nit the Internet Explorer one) (I am only dealing with Windows here) for a folder something like C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash. The first part of this is likely to depend on which drive Flash is stored and which version of Windows is used. I am using XP. The part in bold should be the same for everyone.
Open the folder and look for the two files with icons in the shape of red boxes.
Right click on either icon - it doesn't matter - and click on Properties. Click on the Verison tab. At the top you will see the version number - the current version being 10.1.53.64. Click OK and close the Explorer window.

There may be other ways of course (Edited - see YellowRose's method below for a simpler way)

I don't know if others found this but after I had done the Flash Player update, if I was using Firefox v 3.6.4 and if I had two Flash Players clips running at the same time that the Flash Player could not cope and stopped running. Then when Firefox v.3.6.6 update came through, that Flash Player problem was solved.

I've now looked at the Mozilla website re the update on the Firefox v.3.6.6 and it was done as others were experiencing timeout problems with plugins including Flash Player. Therefore anyone who is using Firefox 3.6.4 and is experiencing odd problems with plugins such as Flash Players just not working should find that their problem is resolved once Firefox is updated to v.3.6.6 (which should be automatic for most of us).

Mozilla do say though that they have done a quick fix update and that it will be necessary for them to issue a further update once they have a more stable solution.

Adobe has today released the Player upgrade for Windows as I previosuly posted they would. The new version is v.6.3.3. You either wait until your Player is automatically updated or you can do it manually which is what I've done.

To update it manually may involve two updates.
If you currently have v 6.3 or v 6.3.1 you will first need to update it to v 6.3.2. This is a link to the update page for v 6.3.2.

If you already have v 6.3.2 or once you have done the first update, you can then update it to v 6.3.3. This is a link to the update page for v 6.3.3

NEW ALERT

Microsift has given a warning to all users with Windows XP (not other versions) that they have identified a bug in the XP help and support system which is used when help centres need to gain access to your pc when you ring them with a problem. I assume they are referring to the Remote Desktop Connection program which can be accessed from the Accessories menu. The security risk also applies to Windows Server 2003.

They have discovered that so far hackers have been able to hijack around 10,000 computers using this. So far the hackers have targeted computers in Portugal, Russia and Croatia. Microsoft say that this weakness has resulted in a variety of trojans, viruses and spam tools to be placed on these computers.

Miscrosoft are working on a fix for this which presumably be automatically downloaded onto your computer as part of their standard updates. In the meantime they have released a temporary fix which will switch off the part of the help and support system which is causing the problem.

This is a link to their page with the fix.

You will see a box headed "Enable this fix" which is the one you need to select.

In due course, once the problem is resolved, you can switch the fix off by selecting the second box "Disable this fix".

Microsoft also advise users to make sure that their firewalls and antivirus software is up to date.
