agreed with those sentiments, another tragedy we realy dont need.
its too crazy how a plane can just 'disappear' ....

it dropped off radar, just means it fell below the hight of any obstacles between it and the radar tower, if it was going down its quite possible for it to fly some distance before it crashed which can delay arrival of search and rescue craft although if it did crash and break up there should be a visible wreckage field since the seat cushions float.

"off the radar" usualy means it has crashed, not disapeared as in the twilight zone, and if its down in the sea there woldnt be many people around to phone the firebrigade etc,
On sky news "lost all hope of finding plane" This is tradgic poor souls lost.
whats unusual is that mayday was not called
OMG! Where was it flying to/ from? How tragic...I do hope they find them, and soon!!!

not if they lost their electrics or there was a cabin pressure issue like that greek airliner a few years back, under those circumstances they wouldnt have been able to use the radar and the tiny air turbine provide very little power.

it took off from Rio de Janeiro bound for Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris - was suppose to land at 9.10am....

Thanks lovely How awful for all those concerned and their Families must be out of their minds with worry!
Please keep me updated as I'm at work and have to rely on the radio!
its transponder gave out mid atlantic so it wasnt on radar, however it was due to land just after 9 and only had a 2 hour reserve although air france are saying they havent given up hope just yet i think pretty much everyone else has at least of finding the whole thing safe.

My God, such a vast area to even look for anything!!!! I am hoping for a miracle now!!!!

me too, there is a chance though, after all that plane landed in the hudson not too long ago and didnt break up although if it was a controlled descent i dont understand why there was no radio contact.
All be hopeful...ok something horrible might have happened but there may still be survivors

Is there a possibility the plane may have been hijacked???? Whichever way it is very disturbing News..

Not At All.
Could Be A Bomb, Explosive Decompresion, Suicide By Either The Pilot (Yes, It Has Happened Before), Or A Passenger (e.g. HiJacking), Could Have Smashed Into A Obstacle They Didn't Know Was There (Controlled Flight Into Terrain, e.g. New Zealand Flight 901), Pilot incapacitation (e.g Helios Airways Flight 522), Could Have Hit Another Plane, A Wing/Engine/Other Part Could Have Fallen Off, You Get The Idea.
HOWEVER, It Really Could Just Be Lost. I Can't Rember The Exact Name Of The Flight But I Know It Has Happened Before Where An Aircraft Has Lost Radio Contact But Appeared "Out Of Nowhere" Again Without Problems
I was thinking it could have been hijacked. If it was a crash surely there'd be some indication of it. Anyway, I hope they are found and if not...It doesn't bear thinking about...
Aww, God help those people, I hope a miracle happens and all turns out well. This isn't doing my phobia of flying any good and I have to fly on the 12th!

Landing A Light Short Haul Aircraft In A Calm River Is Very Different To Landing A Huge Full Long Haul Jet In The Sea - See Ethiopian Airlines Flight 961
Unfortunatlely there is no radar out at sea, once you get beyond 200 miles or so everything is under procedural control.
It does not look good and the area to search will be vast.

oh that doesn't look good Hopefully it'll be found ok
Please let them be safe.

yes i know that, but its still a chance to hope for surely? even if only a tiny one.
on your earlier comment, yes it could be any of those too, i did mention earlier the helios tragedy, if it was any of the ones you mention above, i think the helios crash was the "best" way to go, without panic and distress long before the plane crashed, however with its fuel load it would likely have made landfall and been visible on radar.
