I have watched this since the series ending of csi vegas 
, and i must say how good it is, i'm glad to see a new series in usa begins in a few days time

When the series was shown in the States last year it was shown a week before Christmas. There was then a month's break before the next episode. That could be why the writers decided to have Reese shot so that the break could be put down to Reese recovering.
