I have with a special disability chair so I can sit then swing round and have a shower- have to take the chair off if I want a bath but I struggle to get in as I'm only 5 foot and it puts me off balance trying to get in - steps are not good either for health and safety reasons.

Not sure about the SA judicial system but if there is no Jury and the Judge decides on guilt or innocence and sentence, does everyone that is found guilty get to put their case for what sort of sentence they should receive or is it just the 'privileged' lot and the 'underclass' [mainly black people]  just get prison no questions asked?  If it is everyone it must take forever for cases to finish.. but am thinking only 'special' people get this sort of treatment..

Same here and the USA and other places too I bet..

as far as I know they don't talk personally their DTs do but the more money you have, the better the DT talk.  If you're a poor black/white person in SA you get what you're given but no different to other places - just like here.  The only person who considers the sentence is M'lady - the jurists job was done at time of his been found guilty,

Thanks pengy

But not a jury as we know it? the judge decides the verdict, is that right?

with regards to finding him guilty or innocent - the jurists help the judge decide which route they are taking.  They make suggestions and bring to the judges attention points they believe are relevant (my Dutch friend is a jurist and SA system is based on theirs) as soon as the judge finds person innocent or guilty the jurist job is done   unlike ours where it's the jury that find the person innocent or guilty and the judge just hands down the sentence

ooooh  I'd see it as making the prosecution case stronger, i.e. OP needs custody for protection by the law while he serves his 'term' preferably in a sectioned off section of the prison for those at risk, like peodo's and rapists
