Sounds like the sentence has already been agreed with the Judge and the defence team hence the yawning going on through this process, which is really only for show not anything else. .Sounds like Judgey doesn't listen very well either or has selective hearing when it suits her.. must have been paid off

Will miss this thread when the case officially finishes although do hope the Prosecution appeal the slap on the wrist sentence and it's televised and you lot can resurrect this thread again

I'm thinking negative Ollly, simple because I didn't understand and still don't how Masipa found him not guilty of murder and then in the next breath found him guilty of CH using the same excuse in a contradictory way. If it's what I am expecting I won't be surprised, anything more and it will be a bonus

like you if it's a just a tweak to his bail conditions I hope an appeal goes in quick sharp

I watched the afternoon session on YouTube.

I thought Reeva's cousin did a good job in explaining the type of girl she was and the loving relationship she had with her parents.

Not quite sure that the cat story added anything.

Dame, I agree that someone on the DT had a word with Oscar in the break, as his demeanour was markedly different when he returned.

I did notice Aimee crying and wiping tears at one point, so she is not a total robot.

I think she's made up her mind anyway

I thin she had made up her mind before the sentencing arguments had started.

Given the way things have gone I'm tempted to think she made up her mind before the trial !

On ENCA they have just said that the DT & PT will do Heads of Sentence next. They do not expect the sentence to be given until mid November.

They think a higher degree of neglegence and therefore a custodial sentence.

M'lady was adamant she wants it done and dusted this week   the tie said this afternoon that he doesn't think Gerrie has done well so far and that it will almost certainly be supervision not custodial

Well the tie is going against public opinion   I've switched over to eNCA now to see if they repeat it  I'm like you I'll believe it when I see it, although Gerrie wouldn't promise he would be finished by tomorrow..it may run into November if Masipa is busy for the next four weeks. It may have been discussed after court finished, so far I've not heard it on eNCA

Great work here ladies!

What an extraordinary day in court eh? Nel simply plays with his probation prey and ensures there is yet another career flushed down the pan.  Mind you, I think he may have overdone that witness by his rottweiler impression because I think Judgey may be getting to the end of her tether.

Reeva's cousin, however. How incredibly brave and how well she represented Reeva today.  It was so shocking that she will have been the only person in the trial to have shown what a real living person she was and how horribly her death has affected all her family members. It certainly brought me up short and hope Judgey will take a bit of the account into her sentencing.

One thing I kept meaning to mention and Nel touched on it briefly today with The Skunk. He pointed out that the restaurant shooting (for which Judgey found him guilty of negligence) preceded the shooting of Reeva and therefore The Skunk's assertion that OP's sentence for culpable homicide should take into account it was OP's first offence is void surely?!

Oh, and Pengy, I read in the Guardian live feed that the SA Dept of Correctional Services issued a statement in response to the criticism of the penal system by the DT but I'll bet Nel refers to it tomorrow! I couldn't find a source to cut and paste though.

Phew. My head is aching now!

Here you go Xochi and thanks for the heads up

The South African authorities have hit back at “inaccurate, serious allegations” in the Oscar Pistorius trial that the country’s prisons are dirty, disease-ridden and violent.

The Department of Correctional Services made an extraordinary intervention in the case, issuing a statement saying that it did not want to interfere with the case, where arguments are being made about whether Pistorius should be sent to prison.

But it added: “The image of our correctional centres, our department and our government in general is at stake. We therefore deem it appropriate that we register our concern.”

Annette Vergeer, a probation officer called by Mr Pistorius’s defence team, has described the dangers of drugs, gangs and sodomy in the country's prisons, which she said are poorly-equipped for disabled people as the judge hears mitigating factors in the athlete’s sentencing.

She also warned of the risks of transmission of Aids, tuberculosis and other diseases, due to overcrowding and poor sanitation.

Prison would "break" Pistorius, and "take away his future," she said, adding: "How can we say Pistorius will not be a victim of gang rape?"

Her claims are supported by damning reports issued in recent years by Amnesty International and the Justice Project based at Johannesburg’s Wits University, which last year exposed alleged torture and other abuse at a state prison in Bloemfontein whose running was outsourced to the British firm G4S.

But in a statement entitled “South Africa’s correctional centres are safe and hygienic”, the Department of Correctional Services rejected the “inaccurate serious allegations” made in the Pistorius trial, saying they “sought to cast doubt on the state of our correctional centres”.

“The reports seek to create an impression that our centres are fraught with, among other things, unhygienic conditions, gang violence and sodomy or rape,” it said. “Such allegations about the conditions in our centres are inaccurate.”

Oscar Pistorius, 27, was convicted last month of the manslaughter of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp by shooting at her four times through a locked lavatory door of his Pretoria home, thinking she was an intruder.

The state sought to prosecute Pistorius for premeditated murder, saying he knew who he was shooting and did so because of a furious row, but lost its case.

During a morning adjournment, it was reported that Arnold Pistorius, the athlete’s uncle with whom he lives, hugged Barry Steenkamp, the victim’s father, in a rapprochement between the two families.

Mr Pistorius confirmed to The Telegraph he had “had a chat” with Mr Steenkamp, who suffered a stroke after his 29-year-old daughter’s death and has been largely absent from the trial until its later stages.

"I think he's a good man â€Ķ he's a good soul,” he said.

 Annette Vergeerâ€Ķ..

She recommended house arrest for a man who had beaten up his wife into a vegetative coma.

She recommended correctional supervision as a suitable sentence for teenagers who had gunned down their 17-year-old housemate and kept it a secret for three days, saying the pair stood the risk of being sodomised in prison.

She recommended Molemo “Jub-Jub” Maarohanye as a suitable candidate for correctional supervision as prisons were “devastating “ and overcrowded.

A number of girls some as young as 12 fell victim to the man who she had recommended as a suitable candidate for correctional supervision – the Sunday rapist.
