just to clarify

Reeva Steenkamp's mother June rejected a R375,000 payment from her daughter's killer, Oscar Pistorius, as "blood money", the High Court in Pretoria heard on Tuesday.

"She rejects that, she doesn't want blood money," prosecutor Gerrie Nel told parole officer and social worker Annette Vergeer during cross-examination.

She earlier presented her report on Pistorius, which the defence had paid her to compile, to the court. In it she recommended that Pistorius get three years of correctional supervision and community service for killing Steenkamp.

Nel told Vergeer that Pistorius got the R375,000 from selling his car. It was paid into the trust account of the Steenkamp's lawyer.

Nel said he was concerned this was not mentioned in her report.

He asked her when she was told the Steenkamps had rejected the money.

"I can't confirm 100 percent but I think it was yesterday," she replied.

Nel also referred to monthly payments Pistorius had been making to the Steenkamps, as mentioned in Vergeer's report.

"Those moneys will be paid back to the accused in full, every cent," said Nel.

He wanted to know why this was not mentioned in her report. Vergeer replied the report was compiled during the trial.

So why did they accept the payments in the first place?

Not sure Yogi. Maybe just desperation? They must have had a lot of costs etc. Hope it doesn't get in the way of a civil case against OP.

Ah, okay Rog.

Tweeters seeemed to think that a Civil case was being ruled out today.

I have no clue Yogi, I don't know the circumstances of the agreement...I do know at one point at the end of the trial June Steenkamp was struggling to afford getting to court.

I don't know why it was brought up by the expert, especially as she knew the Steenkamps were paying the money back and didn't want the settlement.

It's normal practice in a lot of countries to make financial settlements and I honestly don't lay any blame against them for whatever the reason that these payments were made.

I am starting to feel disgust at how this defence is being presented, where the killer ends up being the victim  From day one it's never been about justice, its been about poor Oscar and the lightest sentence possible for a man that will not take responsibility for anything that he's ever done. Today dragging the Steenkamps into it was a step to far for me, there's no boundaries they will not breach to make St Oscar look good. I hope Karma comes back to bite him hard on his lying ass

If I heard correctly on the news, Reevas parents have been paid for interviews they have given recently and are now financial viable again. Perhaps that's why Nel said they now intend to pay back every Rand that Oscar has given them.

It seemed odd to me that they accepted money from him in the first place, but if they were desperately short of cash, maybe they felt they had no option at that time?

I think that was the problem Yogi, they couldn't sue him until after the court case and maybe that is why they accepted payments in the short term.

Some of the things that's been said about them is truly disgusting, it's heartbreaking really

In many jurisdictions they read out a Victim Impact Statement - unfortunately poor Reeva is dead, so that can't happen. They should have her parents stand up and speak about the devastation they've suffered. I can't believe this trial

I hope Karma does do that, Dame

they won't do it Rosie, but they have made a written statement as far as I know. They have conducted themselves with dignity throughout, not bad mouthed OP once and gave him a chance to explain...and they are getting ripped to shreds because of tactics

you don't see much of this reported about the Steenkamps

Yesterday, Freddie Sithole, 46, of Soshanguve in Pretoria, told the Herald newspaper in Port Elizabeth of the assistance he has received from the Steenkamp family while he is visiting the city.

Sithole said the Steenkamps have arranged accommodation, meals and transport while he is in the city for two weeks to attend the trial of Mutshutshu Muvhango, 31, who is accused of murdering his daughter, Tshepiso, 18.

I haven't seen any nasty stuff about them but I mostly read stuff in here.

I'm also wondering how they have afforded to treat Barry during and after his stroke - remember there is very little in the way of health care in SA and what there is would kill you rather than cure you.

From what I understand, the women's division of the ANC have also provided funds for them - they are dirt poor and relied heavily on Reeva paying for things

yes the ANC funded June for travel and accommodation as far as I have read Pengy

I've lost track in this trial about who is supposed to be the victims

morning

n the wake of the Pistorius verdict, many voices have been raised condemning the judgment. This week, the ANC Women’s League (ANCWL) met with the National Prosecuting Authority to  discuss the organisation’s displeasure at the verdict and to lobby for an appeal. According to SAPA, the ANCWL has said that if the verdict is appealed, it would like to appear as a friend of the court to support the state’s efforts to have the not guilty verdict overturned. – FD
