I think a huge part of the problem was Oscar's testimony. He refused to accept responsibility for any of the lesser charges and blatantly lied, which cast serious doubt on everything else he said. He also seemed to deviate from the defence strategy/version of events which created big problems for Roux.

as for probation officer - shouldn't laugh but her ee woz h'aaartbroken diatribe really made me laugh for all the wrong reasons 

I know she was trying to disprove Nel's suggestion that Oscar was only concerned about himself and showed no remorse after the shooting, but she really didn't help Oscar's case at all. It was all rather cringey.
