It was like that was the norm. No-one really seemed surprised let alone uncomfortable when things got ugly. Dreadful.

It was all the more disturbing as the staff played on the fact it was a vulnerable group of people, some of whom had displayed challenging behaviour at times. The way that guy twisted his report after they'd dragged that young woman from her bed,to make it sound like she was the aggressor- I wonder if that contributed to the fact that people stayed in the unit far longer than anticipated?

There's the thing though Syd - nursing staff aren't paid basic wage , even in the contract culture. I know too that secure unit pay is slightly higher than standard care rates,so it's not solely down to that. The worst offender  was a senior support worker - how the hell did he get promoted?

It starts at ....Toilet level......If the toilets are being cleaned by people who "Don't care" (and the people employing them don't care because they are only toilet cleaners).......

Just watched it on iplayer myself... glad simon and simone got out of there and hope they are now in a place where they can be treated properly. Pisses me right off that there were so many carers at the place that didn't give a crap and you have to question how they got a job as a carer in the first place.

That guy who wanted to open his own tattoo shop, why is he in the job as a carer? Do they not have to go through years of training or some sort? The worrying thing is that its likely Castlebeck aint the only hospital that has this going on... abusive care is likely to be widespread.

Glad Panorama showed it though, wasn't aware that this could be going on until they showed it... I think people will take notice now and the government will start clamping down on it all. The inspections sound like a total flop, anyone could simply change the way they work when there is a supervisor around.

MrMincePie

the whole program  was shocking.

i cannot believe the whistle blower, informed the  regualtor 3 times  about the abuse and titled his emails to them ' ABUSE' and they ignored everyone of them, the  mealy mouthed plank they  had representing that body had no answer  or humility about it, just interested in batting off the allegations of incompetence and assuring us it could'n thappen again, altho we werent told why it couldnt happen again.

It's jobs for the boys again, well paid positions on boards for people who are only there to line their own pockets .

at least the  new boss of the hospital admitted it was terrible and  said he was ashamed to be associated with the hospital and it's staff.

too little, too late maybe but at least he put his hands up and didn't come out with trite excuses  and supercilious  plattitudes.

i hope those responsonsible for the bullying and abuse feel the full weight of the law.

I watched it earlier this afternoon and I was gobsmacked   it's the most appalling treatment of learning disabled people I've ever seen  my brother is learning disabled so it peaked my interest to watch it.

I know they've arrested 4 and suspended 13 but  none of them should ever be in a job that requires a position of trust

My heart went out to poor Simone as she's suffered the most abuse - how could anyone treat a person like they did

by the end of it I was raging at the telly

Castlebeck own/run several other establishments.  I doubt Winterbourne View was a one-off.  If I had a relative in one of their hospitals I would be looking to remove them asap.

Care homes are inspected from time to time by the Care Quality Commission. Their last inspection was on 15 December 2009 but Winterbourne View had been told about the inspection beforehand.

This is a link to the CQC report on this inspection

Although the inspection passed Winterbourne View, it did find some shortcomings. These included a lack of what staff training had been completed. In particular "Staff do not receive
annual update training in deescalation and physical intervention techniques"

Also "The patient guide does not provide accurate information on the complaints policy or the Care Quality Commission and inspection reports. Some patients are unable to read and understand the guide.

These shortcomings were supposed to have been dealt with, but obviously weren't.

Also Winterbourne View had been put on notice of the inspection beforehand. It is classified as providing hospital services rather than as a care home. My mother had to go into a care home, then a nursing home, and I looked at the CQC reports on various homes at the time. Inspections of care homes and nursing homes seem to be unannounced.

This company was being paid an astonishing ÂĢ3,500 a week per patient to "care"

All contracts in the rest of the Castlebeck group should now be terminated.

It was horrific to watch, and it's hard to believe that a meat head like Wayne and his willing gang of thugs could get away with it.  The higher ups seemed to be complicit in it too, not really giving enough of an arse to do their jobs.  These people were treated as less than human and had no come back.  It was institutionalised torture of the most vulnerable and least represented.

What killed me was when Simone's mum had told her and she didn't believe her because 'it's not allowed, they're not allowed to do that'.  I'm sure that this isn't the norm (to think so is to do down all the amazing carers) and that this is an extreme abuse that has been exposed, the worry is how easily it can happen.  And how absolutely feckin useless the CQC is.
