I hope I'm one of those that qualifies for a rebate because of the mess up at the IR, but I don't know the criteria

Explain ?
I already had a rebate this year. Just phone your local tax office and ask them. I've always found them really helpful.

Apparently a lot of us have been paying the wrong tax Skylark, because of a new computer system brought in by the Inland Revenue. I'm watching Sky News now and supposedly 4.5 mill have been underpaying and they're going to get letters on Tuesday and it will have to be paid back over a year. However, less than that have been overpaying and may get a rebate of about ÂĢ400 per person.

Another worry , dont know why i bother working to be honest, people on benefits seem to have an easy ride ..dont pay rent, only a part of council tax...oh i wont go off on one ......
Get out your P60.....see what you earned before tax, deduct your allowance...then take 20% of the rest...that's the PAYE you should have paid...then compare it to the figure on the P 60...they should be the same.
This is only the tax due on income....other income has to be taken into account for your total tax liability.

I know Skylark, but there are decent people on benefits through no fault of their own. I myself was made redundant three years ago after 30 years of service with the same company. I hated being on benefits and luckily enough I managed to get a job about a year ago. It's not the same for everyone though. It's the peeps who abuse the system and don't want to work that really get my goat
